Roman Gladius Sword - Pompeii Type | With Scabbard
Battle-Proven Design
This model corresponds to the historical "Pompeii" type, which became the standard issue for the Roman army from the mid-1st century AD. It is recognised by its straight, parallel edges and a shorter triangular tip. The blade is forged from quality 1045 carbon steel with a hardness of approx. 48–50 HRC. Although it is a replica, it feels robust and authentic in hand.
The hilt is made of hardwood featuring anatomical finger grooves, ensuring a firm grip even in the heat of (mock) battle. A spherical wooden pommel balances the weapon and completes the classic look. Included is a beautiful wood-core scabbard covered in leather, adorned with massive brass fittings. Four brass rings allow for traditional suspension from a belt (balteus).
Functionality and Safety Warning
We believe in honesty. Although the manufacturer labels this sword as "battle-ready," at Outfit4Events we prioritise your safety. We do not provide a warranty against blade breakage during combat use. Therefore, we sell this Gladius primarily as:
- A Decorative Piece: It looks magnificent on display.
- Costume Accessory: Ideal for re-enactment, photography, theatre, or LARP (non-metal contact).
- Drill Tool: Suitable for practicing drawing, stances, and formations without blade contact.
Historical Insight: Why the Gladius?
The Gladius was designed for close-formation combat. While barbarians required space to swing long swords, the Roman legionary protected himself with a large shield (scutum) and used the short Gladius for quick, deadly stabbing thrusts. The Pompeii type seen here was an evolution of the older Mainz type—easier to manufacture and slightly shorter, prioritising discipline and efficiency over brute force.

Care Instructions
Your Gladius requires care just like any other tool. The blade is made of carbon steel, which means it is not stainless. Moisture is its enemy. Wipe the blade with a dry cloth after every touch or use and apply a thin layer of oil (e.g., WD-40 or gun oil). You can polish the brass fittings on the scabbard with metal polish to keep them shining like new. The wooden parts of the hilt will benefit from occasional treatment with wax or linseed oil.
