History, Typology, and Battlefield Usage
The historical original of this renowned short sword originates from the period between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD, spanning the late Roman Republic and early Principate. Typologically, it represents the famous Mainz-type gladius, distinguished by its slightly waisted blade that broadens before tapering into a long, aggressive thrusting point.
In battle, Roman legionnaires and centurions wielded the gladius as a primary thrusting weapon behind the massive curved shield (scutum). The long, sharp point allowed soldiers to deliver rapid, lethal thrusts from behind shield walls during tight formation combat. Its compact size provided supreme agility in cramped melee engagements where the longer swords of Celtic and Germanic warriors were rendered unwieldy.
Significance of the Name Aquila
This sword carries its proud name Aquila (Latin for eagle) in honor of the most sacred emblem of the Roman legions. The eagle was revered as the personal bird of Jupiter, king of gods, and the legionary eagle standard (Aquila) embodied the honor and spirit of the military unit. Losing the Aquila in battle meant ultimate disgrace. Care and Safety Instructions
The 1065 high carbon steel blade is not stainless. To maintain its dark antiqued finish and prevent corrosion, wipe the blade dry after handling and apply a thin layer of protective mineral or gun oil (such as Ballistol). Clean the metal hilt fittings and scabbard accents with a dry cloth only. Maintain the leather baldric and scabbard wrap using beeswax leather balm.

For safety reasons, it is a decorative and collector's item NOT intended for contact fencing, HEMA sparring, stage fighting, or target cutting tests!
