Although the Roman shortsword we offer here is not a one-to-one replica of an actual archaeological piece, it is patterned after the gladii used by the Roman legions during the first half of the 1st c. AD. The broad, double-edged blade with flat diamond cross-section is forged out of EN45 spring steel (not tempered, not hardened). With its parallel, straight edges and long, sharply pointed tip, it corresponds to a classically styled Fulham or Mainz-Fulham type gladius, believed to be a transitional type between the Mainz and the later Pompeii types (or a mere variation within the Mainz group).
