Roman Mainz Gladius with Bone Grip and Ornate Scabbard

The Legacy of the Legionaries: The Mainz Type

The gladius was the standard weapon for Roman heavy infantry between the 3rd century BC and the 3rd century AD. The Mainz type, named after the discovery sites of the first such swords in Germany, represents the peak design of the early Empire. While later models often featured straighter edges, the Mainz type retains the elegant tapering of the blade and an exceptionally long point (ort), reflecting the tactical focus on close-quarters combat within tight formations. Over time, this legendary short sword was gradually replaced by the longer spatha, but its fame as the symbol of Roman military might remains eternal.

Technical Details and Construction

This model is designed as a high-quality collector's item and decorative piece. The blade, featuring a diamond cross-section, is forged from EN45 spring steel (carbon steel, not stainless). The grip is crafted from genuine bone, while the guard and pommel are made of wood. The full tang is securely fastened at the end of the pommel with a decorative brass nut. The included wooden scabbard is covered in red leather and features elaborate brass fittings with palmette decorations and four carrying rings for authentic belt suspension.

Safety and Maintenance

As this is a decorative item, the sword is not intended for practical fencing (HEMA), stage combat, or cutting tests. The blade is neither hardened nor heat-treated and features unsharpened edges (approx. 1 mm) to minimize the risk of injury. Never use the gladius for man-to-man duels or strikes against hard surfaces, as this could damage the construction or cause injury.

The carbon steel used is not stainless and may show slight signs of corrosion. We recommend wiping the blade dry after every touch to remove sweat and regularly applying a thin layer of universal oil, such as Ballistol, to preserve the steel. The leather and brass components of the scabbard should also be treated occasionally to maintain their beauty.

Recommended Accessories

To complete your legionary kit, we recommend a matching Roman Cingulum belt and an authentic wool tunic. A large Scutum shield paired with this gladius forms the perfect ensemble for any Roman soldier recreation.

Would you like me to help you find a suitable Roman belt that would work with the four suspension rings on this scabbard?
