Ikusa Stage Combat Katana, Blunt Blade, 9260 Steel

Safety First: A Weapon for Practice and Stage

Unlike sharp-edged katanas, the Ikusa model is specially adapted for the needs of stage combat. Every element has been thoughtfully designed to minimise the risk of injury during practice and performance.

  • Blunt Blade: The striking edge is widely ground to a thickness of approx. 1.5 mm, and the tip of the blade is rounded for safety.
  • Flexible Steel: The blade is forged from 9260 carbon spring steel and hardened to approx. 55 HRC. This material is renowned for its ability to absorb impact and return to its original shape, reducing the risk of breakage.
  • Robust Construction: The blade's tang (nakago) is extra long and secured in the handle with two thick bamboo pegs (mekugi). This ensures an exceptionally strong bond between the blade and the handle.

Authentic Materials and Traditional Craftsmanship

Despite its focus on safety, the Ikusa katana retains a traditional appearance and uses only high-quality, authentic materials – no plastics are used.

  • Blade: A solid blade in the Shinogi-Zukuri style without a fuller (Bo-Hi) for maximum strength.
  • Handle (Tsuka): Wrapped with black cotton ito in the Katate-Maki (battle wrap) style. Underneath the wrap are panels of genuine ray skin (samegawa) to prevent the wrapping from shifting.
  • Fittings (Koshirae): The guard (tsuba) with a cut-out floral motif, collar (fuchi), and pommel cap (kashira) are all made of metal. The blade collar (habaki) and washers (seppa) are made of brass.
  • Scabbard (Saya): The wooden scabbard is finished in a matte black lacquer with glossy black speckles in the Kuroishime style.

Important Safety Instructions

Although this katana is designed as a safe training weapon, it is still a sword that can cause injury if used improperly. Always use appropriate protective gear, such as a mask, gloves, and body protection, during stage combat practice. Train under the supervision of an experienced instructor. This sword is not intended for uncontrolled, full-force combat.
