Origin, History, and Traditional Usage
The design of this sword draws inspiration from the golden age of the samurai during the Sengoku and Edo periods (16th to 19th century). In this era, the katana served as the primary sidearm of the samurai class and was revered as the warrior's soul. This particular piece was forged in the renowned swordmaking region of Longquan in Zhejiang province, China, where bladesmithing traditions span over 2,000 years. Master smiths crafted the blade from folded high carbon steel using time-honoured techniques, giving the metal its signature layered grain (hada).
The blade exhibits a tough core with a hardness rating of approximately 40–45 HRC along the edge and 35 HRC near the guard (habaki) for optimal shock absorption. The temper line (hamon) is artistically simulated to achieve an authentic traditional appearance.
Significance of the Name Nami & Water Dragon Lore
This sword carries the honorary name Nami (Japanese for Ocean Wave) and is decorated with the motif of the Japanese water dragon (Ryūjin or Mizuchi). In Shinto belief and Japanese mythology, water dragons were revered as divine guardians ruling the seas, rain, and rivers, bringing warriors good fortune, wealth, strength, and protection. Care and Safety Instructions
High carbon steel blades are not stainless and will rust if exposed to moisture. After handling, wipe the blade clean with a dry cloth and apply a thin coat of traditional Choji oil or mineral oil. Never touch the blade with bare hands, as natural skin oils cause instant tarnishing and oxidation. Store the katana in a dry indoor environment inside its cotton storage bag.
