Centurion Gladius Mainz Type with Patinated Blade and Scabbard
History: The Backbone of the Legion
For centuries, the Gladius was the primary weapon of Roman legionaries. This specific variant, with a slightly waisted blade, refers to the Mainz type, which was popular in the early Empire. It was designed primarily for thrusting combat in tight formations, where legionaries, protected by large shields (scutum), delivered deadly thrusts into the exposed parts of their enemies.
The name of this model refers to the Centurion, a professional officer who commanded a century (approx. 80 men). Centurions were the backbone of the army, experienced veterans who led men into battle from the front lines. Their badge of office was not only the transverse crest on the helmet but also the vitis (vine staff) and often more ornate equipment than that of the common soldier.
Craftsmanship and Details
You will be particularly impressed by the hand-forged blade with a diamond cross-section. Its dark patina gives it a "battle-worn" look, as if you had just pulled it from the heat of battle. The grip is made of solid wood, turned and profiled for a firm hold. The guard and pommel are reinforced with brass elements. The package includes a beautiful leather-covered wooden scabbard, decorated with metal reliefs (including the motif of the Capitoline Wolf suckling Romulus and Remus) and equipped with a leather baldric, so you can sling the sword over your shoulder immediately.

Usage and Safety
This replica is made of high-quality hardened steel. Although it has a "battle-ready" construction, the edge thickness is approx. 1.2 mm. It is not intended for full-contact combat (Buhurt, HMB) involving hard impacts with other steel weapons, as this could damage the edge. It is ideal for:
- Drills and technique practice
- Stage combat (observing safety protocols)
- Costume purposes (Re-enactment, high-end Cosplay)
- Collecting and decoration
Important warning for LARP: Although the gladius is suitable as a costume accessory, due to the steel blade, you must never use it in LARP battles against other players. There is a risk of serious injury.
Sword Care
Since the blade is made of carbon steel (not stainless), it requires your care to prevent rust. Wipe the blade dry after every use or touch and preserve it with suitable oil (e.g., Ballistol or WD-40). If you are not using the sword for a long time, store it outside the scabbard or oil the blade thoroughly. Avoid striking hard objects (stones, concrete, solid iron).
A period-appropriate Roman dagger (Pugio) or belt (Cingulum) perfectly complements this gladius, completing your look as a fearless commander.
