Imori Katana – Sword of the Mountain Newt by John Lee

Nature-Inspired Design

The dominant feature of this sword is its koshirae (mountings). The guard (Tsuba), hilt collar (Fuchi), and pommel (Kashira) bear detailed motifs of a golden newt, contrasting with the dark background. The wooden handle is covered with genuine ray skin (Same) and tightly wrapped in dark blue cotton in a traditional style. This wrap not only looks great but also ensures a secure and comfortable grip. The black high-gloss lacquered scabbard (Saya) elegantly completes the overall impression.

Blade for Aspiring Swordsmen

The blade is hand-forged from 1045 carbon steel. It is a mono-steel construction (not folded), prized for its toughness and durability, making it an ideal material for a first sharp sword. The edge reaches a hardness of approx. 50 HRC. On the blade, you will find an aesthetic, artificially created hamon (temper line), which gives the sword the authentic look of historical originals. The blade is securely fixed in the handle by two bamboo pegs (Mekugi), allowing the sword to be disassembled and cleaned.

Usage Warning

This katana is delivered sharp as a knife. Although 1045 steel can withstand light cuts on soft targets (e.g., plastic bottles, tatami omote), the sword is primarily intended for practicing forms (kata), drawing (iaido), or as a collector's item. It is not intended for heavy cuts into wood or bamboo, nor for blade-on-blade contact fencing. Damage to the blade (chips on the edge, bending, breakage) caused by improper use is not covered by the warranty. Use of the sword is at your own risk.
