Durandal the Sword of Roland | Gold Plated Legend | Marto

A Jewel Among Swords: Detailed Overview

This sword is designed as a high-end decorative wall-hanger, paying tribute to the romanticized vision of medieval weaponry. The first thing that catches your eye is the lavish gold plating covering the entire hilt.

The handle is cast from Zamak alloy, sculpted to evoke royal authority. The crossguard features two intricately detailed lion heads serving as quillons, guarding the blade. In the centre of the guard lies a coat of arms featuring a lion and a double-headed eagle, accented with coloured enamel. The pommel has a unique lobed shape, housing a medallion with a relief face, likely depicting Roland or Emperor Charlemagne himself.

The blade is crafted from high-quality AISI 440 stainless steel, tempered and polished to a mirror finish. Along the ricasso, you will find beautiful, deep acid etching featuring floral and heraldic motifs, a signature of Toledo craftsmanship.

Historical Context: The Song of Roland

Roland, nephew of Charlemagne, is the hero of the epic poem The Song of Roland (La Chanson de Roland). Historically, he fell at the Battle of Roncesvalles on August 15, 778, defending the rearguard of the Frankish army against Basques (later retold as Saracens). His sword, Durandal, was said to be brought by an angel. Legend holds that the golden hilt contained sacred relics: a tooth of Saint Peter, blood of Saint Basil, hair of Saint Denis, and a piece of the raiment of the Virgin Mary. As Roland lay dying, he attempted to destroy the sword against a rock to prevent it from being taken by the enemy. The rock created the "Brèche de Roland" in the Pyrenees, but the sword remained indestructible.

Safety Warnings and Usage

It is vital to understand that this sword is strictly decorative.

  • Not for Combat: The stainless steel blade is hard and rust-resistant, but brittle. Striking objects can cause the blade to snap, creating dangerous shards.
  • Construction: The tang assembly is not designed to withstand the shock of impact or swinging.
  • Handling: The point is sharp. Please handle with care to avoid injury.

Care Instructions

To ensure this treasure lasts a lifetime, follow these simple tips:

  • Do not touch the blade with bare hands. Fingerprints contain acids that can mark the steel. If touched, wipe clean immediately with a dry cloth and apply a light coat of oil (e.g., WD-40 or gun oil).
  • Remove dust from the intricate hilt with a soft brush.
  • Avoid storing the sword in damp environments to protect the finish.
