John Lee Nishikigoi Katana (Koi Carp), Functional, Folded 1045 Carbon Steel

Detailed Description of the Sword and Decorations

The Nishikigoi Katana stands out for its traditional craftsmanship and rich ornamentation featuring the Koi carp motif, which is deeply rooted in Japanese culture.

The Blade (Nagasa)

The blade, with a length of 71.5 cm (approx. 28.1 inches), is sharply honed and made from hand-forged and folded 1045 Carbon Steel. The folding of the steel created a beautiful Damascus pattern visible on the blade's surface. To reduce the overall weight and improve aerodynamics, the blade is equipped with a longitudinal groove (Hi). A brass collar (Habaki) separates the blade from the guard.

Handle and Fittings (Tsuka, Tsuba, Menuki)

  • Guard (Tsuba): The round, openwork guard is richly decorated with Koi carp motifs swimming in water waves. The brass colour of the guard beautifully contrasts with the dark handle.
  • Handle (Tsuka): The wooden handle is covered with genuine ray skin (Samegawa) and traditionally wrapped with a dark blue cotton cord (Tsuka-Ito) in a diamond pattern.
  • Ornaments (Menuki): Under the wrapping, there is a pair of decorative metal ornaments (Menuki), which are also shaped like Koi carp.
  • Construction: The sword is constructed with an especially long tang (Nakago) that runs through the entire handle and is secured with a single bamboo peg (Mekugi), ensuring the strength and stability necessary for a functional sword.

Scabbard (Saya)

The sword comes with an elegant wooden scabbard (Saya) in black with a dark blue cord (Sageo) that matches the colour of the handle wrap. The scabbard protects the blade and allows for safe storage and carrying of the sword.

Usage and Safety Instructions

This Katana is intended for decorative purposes and practical use (cutting), such as Tameshigiri tests on soft targets (mats, straw). It is not suitable for contact fighting, HEMA, SCA fencing, or stage combat where blades collide.

Warning: This is a sharply honed weapon that poses a mortal danger! Use is strictly at your own risk and responsibility! Maximum safety must always be maintained when handling the Katana, and ensure that no people or animals are in the vicinity. Store the sword out of reach of children and unauthorized persons. We do not recommend disassembling the weapon!

Weapon Classification for Fencing: This is Class C according to the classification of battle-ready weapons for fencing, product without guarantee! More information about the classification can be found at: CZ / DE / EN.

Caring for Your Katana

The sword must be regularly maintained to preserve its quality and appearance. The carbon steel blade is susceptible to rust. After each use, the blade must be cleaned of dirt and wiped dry. Then, oil the blade with a thin layer of special conservation oil (e.g., camellia oil or another mineral oil) and return it to the scabbard. Keep the handle and scabbard dry. Store the Katana in a dry environment.
