Samurai Sword Katana in Shinogi-Zukuri Style with Mythical Dragon Motif
Symbolism and Historical Legacy of the Japanese Dragon
In Japanese mythology, the dragon (Ryu) plays an indispensable role. Unlike European dragons, it is seen as a water deity and a protector who brings prosperity. The depiction of a dragon on a sword's fittings was intended to give its owner courage and protect them in battle. The katana, as the soul of the samurai, was not just a lethal tool but also a work of art and a status symbol. This particular model pays homage to Japanese tradition through its darkly patinated elements, evoking the antique look of weapons passed down from generation to generation.
Materials and Craftsmanship of the Fittings
Upon closer inspection, you will appreciate the complete absence of any plastic parts. The handle (tsuka) is carefully covered with real ray skin (samegawa), which provides a perfect grip thanks to its rough texture. Over this, a black cotton cord (tsuka-ito) is precisely wrapped in the classic Hineri-Maki style. The metal components, such as the pommel (kashira), collar (fuchi), and ornaments under the wrap (menuki), are richly decorated with the dragon motif. The most dramatic element is the massive guard (tsuba), formed by the coiled body of this mythical creature. The blade collar (habaki) and washers (seppa) are made of polished brass. The scabbard (saya) is made of wood, finished in a high-gloss black lacquer in the Kuroro style, and equipped with a traditional tying cord (sageo).
Blade Properties and Safety Warnings
The blade is hand-forged from 1045 high carbon steel and shaped in the classic Shinogi-Zukuri cross-section. It features a fuller (bo-hi), which not only reduces the overall weight of the sword and shifts the center of gravity closer to the guard but also creates a characteristic whistling sound (tachikaze) during a properly executed cut. The blade extends through the entire length of the handle (full tang) and is securely fastened with two bamboo pegs (mekugi), allowing for its complete disassembly for maintenance purposes. An aesthetic, fake temper line (hamon) is ground onto the edge.
Important Safety Warning: Although the blade is made of carbon steel, the 1045 grade is among the softer martial arts materials. The sword features a sharp blade, and there is a risk of serious or fatal injury if mishandled. Use of the sword is strictly at your own risk. We recommend this sword primarily for non-contact forms practice (kata). It is not intended for contact fencing, cutting tests (tameshigiri) on hard targets, or duels.
Caring for Your Samurai Sword
To ensure your katana serves you well for a long time and retains its shine, regular care is essential. The carbon steel blade is susceptible to rust, so it must be carefully wiped free of sweat and treated with a thin layer of special clove oil (choji) after every contact with your hands or exposure to humidity. Avoid touching the polished surface of the blade with bare hands. Protect the wooden scabbard from drops and extreme temperature fluctuations, which could damage its lacquered finish.
To complement this beautiful piece, we recommend purchasing a traditional Japanese cleaning kit and a wooden stand, which will allow the sword to stand out perfectly as a decoration in your home.
