Decorative Wakizashi Shimazu in Red and Black Finish

Detailed Description of the Sword

This short wakizashi is a faithful smaller version of its longer counterpart, filled with details that will delight any collector.

The Blade (Nagasa)

The shorter blade, typical for a wakizashi, is crafted from AISI 420 stainless steel and is left blunt for safety. Its surface is adorned with an etched line of a false hamon. Just like on the katana, you will find two gilded mon (crests) of the Tokugawa clan near the guard, placing the sword in the famous era of the Japanese shoguns.

The Handle (Tsuka) and Guard (Tsuba)

The handle, made of natural hardwood, is lacquered in a rich red color. Its smooth surface, lacking the traditional cord wrap, highlights the golden-toned fittings – the menuki and kashira. The sword's dominant feature is the intricate guard (tsuba) made of zamak alloy, which depicts samurai in battle and is equipped with a distinctive knuckle-bow D-guard, a very unusual element for Japanese swords.

The Scabbard (Saya) and Accessory Knives

The aluminum scabbard (saya) features a black polished surface with red patterns. Its upper part is decorated with a red-and-black cord (sageo). The scabbard also traditionally holds small accessory tools – the Kozuka knife and the Kōgai hairpin-like tool, completing the overall look.

Use and Inspiration

This wakizashi is a strictly decorative item. It is not intended for fencing, cutting practice, or any other practical use. It will look its best:

  • Displayed alongside the Shimazu Katana as a complete daishō set, the symbol of a samurai's status.
  • As a standalone, striking piece in your collection or as a wall decoration.
  • An original accessory for a cosplay or theatrical costume (for non-contact roles).
  • A unique gift for admirers of Japanese culture who appreciate unconventional design.

The Samurai's Companion: The Role of the Wakizashi

For a samurai, the wakizashi was an indispensable weapon. While they often had to leave their long katana at the entrance of a house, they were allowed to keep the wakizashi with them. It was their personal defense weapon for close-quarters combat. The set of a katana and wakizashi, called the daishō ("big-little"), was the privilege and proud symbol of the samurai class. This sword, bearing the name of the powerful Shimazu clan, proudly represents this tradition.

Caring for Your Sword

Maintenance is simple. To remove dust and fingerprints, regularly wipe the sword with a soft, dry cloth. Thanks to the stainless steel and lacquered surfaces, the sword does not require any special preservation. Protect it from moisture and do not use aggressive cleaning agents.
