Crane wakizashi with black saya

The Crane wakizashi is a decorative Japanese sword styled around the traditional aesthetics of samurai arms. Its most distinctive details include an elaborate openwork tsuba, black grip wrapping over a light-coloured underlayer and decorated metal fittings. The curved 440 stainless steel blade is hardened and tempered to 47–51 HRC and is accompanied by a matt black lacquered saya. At approximately 76 cm overall, this wakizashi makes an attractive display piece for a cabinet or sword stand, either by itself or alongside the matching katana. It is strictly a decorative item and is not a functional sword. Further product information ...

Crane wakizashi with black saya

Openwork tsuba and Japanese-inspired styling

A particularly distinctive feature is the circular tsuba with its open design formed from numerous sweeping lines. The grip is wrapped in black cord, revealing a light-coloured textured underlayer through regularly spaced diamond-shaped openings. Small decorative details and a raised, ornamented grip cap complete the appearance. Together these features draw on the visual language of traditional Japanese koshirae, the complete external mounting of a sword.

The polished curved blade has a wavy decorative line near the cutting-edge side, visually reminiscent of a hamon. On this modern decorative wakizashi, it should be regarded as a design feature rather than evidence of traditional differential hardening. A matt black lacquered saya with black cord and a decorative metal end fitting is included.

The wakizashi in samurai arms

The wakizashi is a shorter Japanese sword that became particularly significant during the Edo period (1603–1868). Samurai carried it together with the longer katana, forming a pair known as daishō. While the katana served as the longer sword, the more compact wakizashi complemented it and could be more manageable in confined surroundings.

An interesting aspect of its history is that the daishō became one of the most recognisable symbols of samurai status under the Tokugawa shogunate. Artistic attention was paid not only to the blade but also to the tsuba, menuki, kashira and other fittings. These could feature natural subjects, family emblems, religious symbolism or mythological scenes, developing into a distinct field of Japanese decorative craftsmanship.

Why the name Crane

The crane is a familiar motif in Japanese culture. It is traditionally associated with longevity, good fortune and auspicious wishes and appears in painting, textiles and decorative arts. The name therefore complements the Japanese-inspired appearance of this wakizashi while also linking it to the matching katana of the same name.

Intended use

We recommend this wakizashi as a decorative piece, collectable or non-functional prop. It can be displayed on its own on a sword stand or in a cabinet, or paired with the matching katana to create a decorative arrangement inspired by the historical daishō. Before returning the blade to its saya, make sure it is clean and dry and insert it carefully without applying sideways pressure.

This wakizashi is not intended for practical use. Do not use it for cutting tests, blade testing, contact fencing, combat practice, striking or thrusting. Its decorative construction is not designed to withstand the dynamic stresses placed on a functional Japanese sword.
