Hand-Forged Golden Flower Katana made of 1045 Carbon Steel
Harmony of Steel and Natural Motifs
The dominant feature of this katana is its rich ornamentation. The guard (tsuba), as well as the other fittings (fuchi, kashira, menuki), bear detailed reliefs of flowers rendered in gold and silver colours. In Japanese culture, these motifs often symbolize the transience of life and the beauty of the moment, a philosophy intrinsically linked to the way of the samurai. The blade is forged in the traditional Shinogi Zukuri profile and features a groove (Bo-Hi), which reduces the weight of the weapon and produces a characteristic whistling sound when swung.
The construction of the sword is designed to look as authentic as possible. The handle (tsuka) is covered with real ray skin, which ensures a firm grip and prevents the wrap from slipping. The wrap is made of black cotton in the classic hineri-maki style. The blade is secured in the handle by two bamboo pegs (mekugi), making the sword fully dismantlable – something you will appreciate especially during maintenance. The temper line (hamon) on this blade is artificially created by cross-polishing, giving the sword the appearance of much more expensive, differentially hardened originals.
Usage and Care
Although the blade is made of 1045 carbon steel and is sharpened, we recommend this sword primarily as an exclusive decorative item, part of a costume, or for practicing drawing (iaido) and forms (kata) with maximum caution. 1045 steel is a basic structural steel; it is tough but does not reach the hardness of higher-end steels (e.g., 1095). Therefore, we do not recommend performing cutting tests (tameshigiri) on hard materials (bamboo, wood) with this sword to avoid damaging the edge.
For maintenance, use traditional clove oil (Choji oil). Clean and oil the blade after every touch with a bare hand, as human sweat is aggressive and causes corrosion. Avoid sharpening on modern electric grinders, as this would ruin the blade profile and its surface finish. A single sword stand in black lacquer would be a perfect match for this sword, highlighting the elegance of the scabbard (saya).
