Katana Citadel Yushu – The Spirit of Excellence

Blade: The Soul of the Samurai

The Shinogi-Zukuri style blade is forged from high-quality 1075 carbon steel. What makes it exceptional is the traditional differential hardening using clay paste. The result is an edge with a hardness of approx. 60 HRC that holds a razor-sharp edge, while the spine remains softer (approx. 40 HRC) to absorb shock and prevent breakage. Thanks to the polisher's skill, the beautiful, clearly visible temper line (hamon) stands out on the blade. The blade also features a groove (bo-hi), which improves balance and creates an audible feedback (tachikaze) during a proper cut.

Koshirae: Artistry in Details

The fittings are breathtaking. The iron guard (tsuba) is not a simple casting but is handmade, depicting a Japanese temple with cherry blossoms (sakura). The handle is wrapped in black Japanese silk in the katate-maki style (battle wrap), distinct for its single-strand crossover, often preferred for one-handed combat techniques. Underneath the wrap, silver-plated bronze ornaments (menuki) contrast beautifully with the dark silk. The assembly is completed with a habaki made of engraved, silver-plated copper and seppa of silver-plated brass.

The real gem is the scabbard (saya). It is finished in high-gloss black lacquer featuring an inlay of polished ray skin (Same Kuroro style) near the opening, adding a touch of luxury to the sword.

Care and Maintenance

Since the blade is made of 1075 carbon steel, it requires your care to prevent rust. Clean and treat the blade with high-quality clove oil (choji) after every practice session or touch. Avoid touching the blade with bare hands, as human sweat is acidic. The wooden box the sword arrives in is for safe transport only; for display, I recommend purchasing a proper stand.

Safety Warning

This katana is an extremely sharp and fully functional weapon. It is not a toy or a dull replica. Exercise extreme caution during handling, cleaning, and training. Use for cutting (tameshigiri) requires knowledge of proper technique; otherwise, you risk damaging the blade (e.g., bending due to poor edge alignment), which is not covered by the warranty.
