Charlemagne Sword “Joyeuse” – Limited Edition by Marto
A Masterpiece Featuring Damasquinado Technique
This replica is not designed for combat, but for admiration. The blade, made of high-quality AISI 420 stainless steel, is decorated with a technique that has made Toledo famous worldwide – Damasquinado (Damascene). It is an imitation of Damascus steel with deep etching filled with 24-karat gold and black enamel. On the blade, you will find heraldic motifs, fleur-de-lis, and stylized figures referencing the Carolingian Renaissance.
The hilt is massive and richly decorated. The cross-guard, shaped like winged mythological beasts (referencing the original coronation jewel), and the pommel with relief motifs are plated with gold and silver, creating a breathtaking contrast. The grip features a specific diamond texture for a firm hold and aesthetic perfection. The package also includes an elegant wooden plaque, allowing you to install this treasure on your wall immediately.
Historical Window: The Sword That Crowned Kings
Charlemagne (742–814), Emperor of the Romans, was a ruler who united much of Western and Central Europe. His sword Joyeuse is steeped in legend – it was said that its blade changed colour thirty times a day and that relics were hidden in the hilt. The historical original, now kept in the Louvre in Paris, is a fascinating puzzle of history: the pommel dates to the 10th or 11th century, the guard to the 12th, and the blade was replaced as late as the 19th century. It was used as the coronation sword of French kings for centuries. This replica by Marto unifies the appearance into a single, magnificent whole that evokes the power and glory of the Holy Roman Empire.

How to Care for This Jewel
To ensure the sword retains its shine and value for decades, give it basic care:
- Moisture Protection: Although the blade is stainless steel, the finish can suffer in high humidity environments. Keep the sword dry.
- Cleaning: Use a fine feather duster for dust. If you touch the blade with bare hands, wipe it with a soft cloth dampened in preservation oil so that sweat does not damage the gold plating and etching.
- Unsuitable Cleaners: Never use abrasive pastes or chemical solvents; you would irreversibly damage the Damasquinado decoration.
Safety Warning
Please bear in mind that this is strictly a decorative item. The blade is not constructed for impact.
- No Fencing: Do not perform any lunges, cuts, or fencing drills with the sword. The blade material is brittle, and the hilt construction is not adapted for dynamic stress. There is a risk of breakage and injury.
- Secure Installation: When hanging on the wall, ensure the plaque is firmly anchored. The sword is heavy (almost 1.8 kg / 4 lbs), and falling could cause damage.
For a perfect historical impression, we recommend displaying the sword together with a replica of a medieval coat of arms or near a tapestry depicting a historical scene.
