John Lee Hannya Katana
Are you looking for a sword that has a soul, a story, and uncompromising cutting properties? This katana by John Lee is a tribute to one of the most powerful legends of Japanese folklore. The Hannya mask, depicting a woman transformed into a demon by jealousy and rage, is the central motif of this weapon. However, this is not just a piece of art for a display cabinet. This sword is a full-blooded tool designed for cutting tests (Tameshigiri). The blade, made of 1095 high-carbon steel without a fuller (groove), has a massive cross-section and, thanks to traditional clay tempering, offers an extremely hard and durable edge. If you want a sword that commands respect with both its appearance and performance, the Hannya is the clear choice. Further product information ...

Functional John Lee Hannya Katana – 1095 Carbon Steel Tameshigiri Sword
Construction for Power and Dynamics
The heart of the sword is a blade forged from 1095 carbon steel in Shinogi-Zukuri geometry. Unlike lighter swords, you won't find a groove (Bo-Hi) here. This means the blade is heavier, has more material, and the point of balance is shifted slightly forward, giving it crushing impact energy during a cut. The edge is differentially tempered using clay to a hardness of approx. 60 HRC, while the spine remains more flexible (40 HRC) to absorb shock. The handle (Tsuka) is exceptionally long (32 cm / 12.6 inches), providing you with enormous leverage and control over the weapon. It is covered with real ray skin and tightly wrapped with black cotton in the Hineri-Maki style.
The Dark Elegance of the Hannya Mask
The design of the sword is dark and captivating. The guard (Tsuba), handle fittings (Fuchi and Kashira), and ornaments under the wrap (Menuki) bear detailed reliefs of the Hannya mask. The black lacquered scabbard (Saya) is finished in the traditional Kuroshime style—a matte surface with glossy "drops," evoking the texture of black rain. This style is not only beautiful but also practical, as fingerprints are hardly visible on it.

The Legend of Hannya
Hannya is not just an ordinary ghost. In Noh theatre, she symbolizes the tragic figure of a woman whose unrequited love turned into obsession and hatred. The mask has horns, bulging eyes, and a mouth twisted into a terrifying grin, which, however, when viewed from a certain angle, can also express deep sorrow and suffering. The wielder of this sword symbolically controls this wild and untamed energy.
Care and Safety Warnings
This katana is razor-sharp and requires a responsible approach.
- Blade Maintenance: 1095 steel is not stainless. Clean and oil the blade (e.g., with clove oil) after every touch or practice session to prevent corrosion.
- Care and Maintenance of Samurai Swords and Japanese Swords
- Usage: The sword is constructed for practical cuts (mats, light targets). Never cut into hard objects (stones, metal, thick branches), as this would irreversibly damage the fine edge.
- Handling: Exercise maximum caution when drawing and sheathing the sword. A lapse in concentration can lead to serious injury.
Packaging Note: The sword is delivered in a wooden box with a cloth bag and certificate. The wooden box serves primarily as protective packaging for transport and is included free of charge. It may show minor cosmetic defects, which are not grounds for a claim.
For safe storage and transport, we recommend purchasing a high-quality sword bag.
