Art Gladius Blue-Silver Decorative Tanto – Ornate Zamak Fittings

Detailed Description and Features:

  • Appearance: This tanto is visually very appealing thanks to the contrasting combination of dark blue and silver. The handle and scabbard are adorned with richly decorated metal elements in a silver finish.
  • Blade: Made from 440 stainless steel. A false hamon (imitation temper line) is applied to the blade. The blade is decorative, not sharp (edge thickness only approx. 0.6 mm) and not intended for practical use. The tang length within the handle is approx. 20 mm.
  • Handle (Tsuka): Features a traditional construction – it is covered with white faux rayskin (samegawa) and wrapped with a blue and yellow/silver cord (ito). The fittings (fuchi, kashira) and ornaments under the wrap (menuki) are cast from Zamak alloy and have a decorated, silveren surface.
  • Guard (Tsuba): Cast from Zamak alloy, richly decorated (appearing to feature floral or scrollwork motifs) and colour-matched to the other metal parts in silver.
  • Scabbard (Saya): The wooden scabbard has a smooth surface with a glossy dark blue lacquer finish. It is fitted with ornate mounts (koiguchi, kurikata area, kojiri) made from Zamak alloy in a silver colour. The upper part of the scabbard is additionally wrapped decoratively with a blue-and-silver cord, and a matching hanging cord (sageo) is also present.
  • Dimensions and Weight:
    1. Overall length: approx. 385 mm
    2. Blade length: approx. 230 mm
    3. Tanto weight: approx. 348 g
    4. Scabbard weight: approx. 166 g
    5. Total weight: approx. 514 g
  • Manufacturer: Art Gladius, Toledo, Spain (assumed).

Historical Context and Symbolism:

The tanto retains the classic form of a samurai dagger. The striking colour combination of blue and silver is not typically historical but evokes a sense of luxury, wealth, and perhaps nobility. Silver is often associated with the sun, divinity, and power, while blue can symbolise calmness or dignity. It represents a modern decorative interpretation of a traditional weapon.

Intended Use:

This blue-and-silver tanto is purely a decorative item. It is ideal for:

  • Display as a striking element of interior decor (on a stand, in a display case).
  • Complementing a collection of Japanese weapons or decorative objects.
  • An impressive gift for collectors or lovers of oriental design.
  • Not suitable for: swordsmanship, training, carrying, cutting, stabbing, or any other practical use.

Guidelines for Safe Storage and Display:

  • Although the blade is not sharp, always handle the tanto with care to avoid damaging the decorative parts.
  • Ensure stability when displayed and keep it out of the reach of children.
  • Protect the tanto from falls, impacts, moisture, and direct sunlight.
  • The metal parts made from Zamak alloy and the steel blade can be kept clean by wiping with a soft, dry cloth, possibly using a little preservation oil.

The Blue-Silver Decorative Tanto by Art Gladius is a visually captivating piece that combines traditional form with a luxurious colour scheme and rich decoration. It is an excellent choice for those seeking a striking and unusual decoration inspired by Japan.
