Decorative Wakizashi Date (Samurai Short Sword) with Tokugawa Ieyasu Motifs
Detailed Description of the Sword
Every element of this wakizashi has been designed with attention to detail, forming a perfect pair to the katana of the same series while also standing as a work of art in its own right.
The Blade (Nagasa)
The shorter blade, typical for a wakizashi, is crafted from AISI 420 stainless steel, ensuring easy maintenance and a lasting shine. An etched line of a false hamon runs along the blade's length, giving the sword an authentic look. Near the handle, the blade is adorned with two golden symbols – the mon (crests) of Tokugawa and Ieyasu, confirming the sword's thematic focus.
The Handle (Tsuka) and Guard (Tsuba)
The synthetic resin handle, in an ivory colour, is masterfully decorated with a carving of a samurai battle. Its pommel (kashira) and the round, openwork guard (tsuba) are made of zamak and carry matching motifs of fighting samurai, creating a unified design.
The Scabbard (Saya) and Accessory Knives
The lightweight aluminium scabbard is lacquered in a striking blue with gold accents. Just like the katana, it features a decorative panel with the identical battle scene and a blue cotton cord (sageo). Housed in the scabbard are two traditional accessories: the small knife Kozuka and the skewer-like Kōgai, both with stainless steel blades and ornate zinc handles.
How Can You Use This Sword?
This wakizashi is a strictly decorative item. It is not suitable for contact fencing, cutting, or any other practical use. Its rightful place is:
- Displayed alongside the Date Katana as a complete daishō set in a place of honour.
- As a standalone collector's piece that will stand out in any display case.
- A stylish accessory for a samurai cosplay costume (for non-contact roles).
- An exceptional gift for enthusiasts of Japanese history and martial arts.
From the Sword's History: The Samurai's Companion
The wakizashi was an indispensable companion for the samurai. While the long katana often had to be left at the entrance of a building, the wakizashi could be kept by his side. It served as a backup weapon in confined spaces but also had deep symbolic meaning. It was a sign of samurai status and, in extreme cases, was used for the ritual suicide of seppuku. Together with the katana, it formed the set known as the daishō (literally "big-little"), which was the privilege and symbol of the samurai class.
Caring for Your Sword
Maintenance is simple. A soft, dry cloth is sufficient to remove dust. The stainless steel blade is resistant to corrosion; just keep it clean and dry. Do not use any aggressive cleaning pastes or solutions to avoid damaging the finish of the sword and its decorations.
Please Note: This is a decorative item. It is not intended for fencing, martial arts training, or any other practical use!
