In Japan, the dragonfly (Tonbo) is a revered symbol of courage, strength, and victory. Samurai cherished it because it only flies forward and never retreats—a perfect emblem for the determined warrior. The Tonbo Katana (SH2469) by Hanwei is a masterly tribute to this spirit. The heart of this weapon is its blade, hand-forged and folded from premium K120C powder steel, which guarantees not only a beautiful steel grain (hada) but, above all, exceptional sharpness, toughness, and edge retention. The mountings (koshirae) are equally impressive. The combination of the striking purple cotton wrap (tsuka-ito) and the black iron tsuba with gold and bronze dragonflies is breathtaking. The black lacquer saya (scabbard), also adorned with gold dragonflies, completes this fully functional and extremely sharp sword. It is the perfect choice for iaido, kata, and test cutting (tameshigiri). Further product information ...

Tonbo (Dragonfly) Katana, Hanwei, SH2469, Folded K120C Steel

The dragonfly was so important to the samurai that they nicknamed it kachi-mushi, or the "victory bug". To have its motif on a weapon or armour was believed to bring the wearer luck in battle and an indomitable will. This katana is made for those who seek not just a functional tool, but a weapon with a deep story and symbolism.

Detailed Koshirae (Fittings)

  • Blade: Hand-forged and folded from modern K120C powder steel. This material offers exceptional purity and consistency, leading to excellent edge retention and resilience. The blade features a medium-length tip (chu-kissaki).
  • Tsuba (Guard): Crafted from blackened iron and adorned with a beautiful dragonfly scene, intricately detailed with gold and bronze.
  • Tsuka (Handle): The wooden core is covered with high-quality, genuine ray skin (samegawa). The wrap (tsuka-ito) is made of premium purple Japanese cotton, providing a firm and comfortable grip.
  • Fuchi & Kashira (Collar & Pommel): Made from blackened metal with fine bronze and brass details, continuing the dragonfly theme.
  • Saya (Scabbard): Wooden, finished with a deep black lacquer. It is discreetly decorated with gold dragonflies. The saya fittings (kojiri, koiguchi, and kurikata) are made of polished buffalo horn.
  • Sageo (Cord): An elegant silk cord, intricately woven in dark blue and black.
  • Habaki (Blade Collar): Crafted from a single piece of solid brass.

Safe Use Guidelines

Although this sword is a masterpiece, it is an extremely sharp and dangerous weapon. It is not a toy.

WARNING: Sharp Sword – This is not a toy!

  • Always handle the sword with the utmost caution and respect. It is razor-sharp and can cause severe or fatal injury.
  • Not intended for stage combat or contact sparring with other swords. Folded steel, while tough, is not designed for steel-on-steel impact and the edge could be damaged.
  • The sword is intended for collectors, kata (forms) practice, and test cutting (tameshigiri) on appropriate soft materials (e.g., tatami mats).
  • Never cut at hard objects (wood, bone, metal).
  • Keep the sword out of the reach of children and unauthorised persons. Use is strictly at your own risk.

Sword Care

The K120C high-carbon folded steel blade is not stainless. To maintain its beauty and prevent rust, it requires care. After every use (even after simple handling), wipe the blade clean with a soft cloth (like nugui-gami rice paper) and apply a thin coat of conservation oil, ideally Choji oil or Hanwei Sword Oil. Store the sword in a dry environment. For complete care, we recommend the Japanese Sword Maintenance Kit (OH2105).

Companion Products

To create the complete daishō set, we recommend purchasing the matching Tonbo Wakizashi (SH2470) to accompany this katana.
