Decorative Japanese Tokugawa Tanto Dagger with Red Marbled Scabbard

History and Period Use of the Tanto Dagger

During the feudal period of Japan, the tanto was an integral part of every samurai's arsenal. While the long katana sword was used for combat on the open battlefield, the short tanto was primarily a weapon for close-quarters combat, self-defense in cramped interiors, and, in some cases, for the ritual suicide known as seppuku. It was commonly worn tucked into the belt (obi). Unlike long swords, samurai kept their tanto with them even when visiting palaces and the homes of others. This specific model pays tribute to Ieyasu Tokugawa, one of the most famous military commanders and the unifier of Japan, whose crest (mon) is proudly engraved directly onto the blade.

Craftsmanship Details and Rich Ornamentation

This dagger stands out with its exceptionally detailed craftsmanship aimed at delivering a strong visual impact. The handle (tsuka) conceals a hardwood core, which is covered with a red imitation rayskin and precisely wrapped with a black leather cord (ito). The cast alloy guard (tsuba) catches the eye with an intricate relief depicting samurai on horseback. The scabbard (saya) is highly unusually crafted from aluminium for a dagger of this category, giving it a satisfying weight and durability. Its surface is adorned with red lacquer featuring a fine black pattern reminiscent of marble. Another interesting historical detail is the inclusion of small throwing or utility knives (kozuka and kogai), which complete the overall appearance of the weapon.

Important Safety Information

This product is constructed and intended exclusively for decorative and collectible purposes. Although the AISI 420 stainless steel blade has blunt edges, it features a very sharp point. The weapon is not tempered for stress and is under no circumstances suitable for martial arts training, contact fencing, test cutting (tameshigiri), or drawing practice. Attempting practical use could lead to fatal damage to the blade and serious injury.

Proper Care for Your Decorative Weapon

Thanks to the use of AISI 420 stainless steel, the blade requires very little maintenance and is not prone to normal corrosion. It is sufficient to regularly remove dust from the weapon with a fine duster. For the richly decorated cast fittings and the lacquered aluminium scabbard, we recommend cleaning only with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Strictly avoid the use of any chemical solvents, abrasive pastes, or rough sponges, as these could irreversibly scratch the lacquer and destroy the fine gold plating on the fittings.

Recommended Accessories

To accompany this magnificent Japanese dagger, we highly recommend purchasing an elegant wooden table display stand (tantokake), allowing you to safely and impressively showcase the weapon in your interior.
