Decorative Japanese Wakizashi Minamoto with Ornate Golden Fittings

Are you searching for the perfect piece for your Asian weapons collection or a breathtaking decoration for your study or living room? This beautifully crafted Japanese wakizashi will captivate you at first glance. The striking color combination of black and burgundy, complemented by massive gilded Zamak alloy fittings featuring motifs of Japanese mythology and samurai, gives the sword a touch of true luxury. The high-quality stainless steel blade is adorned with the golden seals (mon) of the mighty Tokugawa clan. As an added bonus, the elaborately decorated scabbard even houses the traditional kozuka utility knife and kogai skewer. Enrich your home with a piece of noble Japanese history and culture!

Historical Context and the Significance of the Wakizashi

During feudal Japan, samurai traditionally wore two swords, a pairing known as the daisho. The longer blade was the katana, whilst the shorter was the wakizashi. While the katana was primarily used for fighting in open spaces, the wakizashi, with a blade length typically between 30 and 60 centimetres (approx. 12 to 24 inches), was perfectly suited for close-quarters combat indoors or in narrow alleyways. It was also the weapon a samurai was permitted to keep on his person when entering another's home, whereas the katana had to be left at the door. Although this specific model is named after the famous Minamoto clan, the blade bears the crest of the Tokugawa family, whose most renowned figure, Tokugawa Ieyasu, unified Japan and became the great Shogun.

Detailed Craftsmanship and Ornamentation

Lovers of fine detail will be thoroughly pleased with this sword. The handle (tsuka) is constructed from red lacquered wood, strikingly wrapped with a black leather cord. Beneath the wrap, you can spot the metallic ornaments known as menuki. The pommel (kashira) and the massive guard (tsuba) are cast from Zamak with exquisite reliefs of samurai and crashing waves, finished in antique gold. The scabbard (saya) is highly unusual, being manufactured from aluminium with a black lacquered and polished surface, enhanced by delicate golden painting and burgundy elements. A traditional knotted sageo cord completes the authentic look.

Important Safety Warnings

We must strongly emphasise that this product is manufactured strictly for decorative and display purposes. The AISI 420 stainless steel blade is blunt, unhardened, and not structurally designed to withstand impacts. Under no circumstances should this sword be used for martial arts training, contact fencing, test cutting (tameshigiri), or drawing practice (iaido). Doing so may cause the blade to loosen or shatter, resulting in severe injury to yourself or bystanders.

Sword Care and Maintenance

As the blade is crafted from stainless steel, it is practically maintenance-free and highly resistant to corrosion. Simply dusting the weapon occasionally with a soft duster is sufficient. The ornate cast fittings and the aluminium scabbard can be gently polished using a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive powders, or rough sponges, as these will permanently ruin the gold plating and the intricate painting on the scabbard.

Recommended Accessories

To complement this magnificent sword, we recommend purchasing an appropriate wooden table stand (katanakake) or a wall display mount, ensuring your new wakizashi is displayed properly and safely within your interior.
