Are you looking for a weapon that commands respect on the battlefield solely through its monumental silhouette? This Flamberge-type two-handed sword is an imposing piece of steel that will instantly transport you to the era of the Renaissance wars. It was then that elite mercenaries, known as Landsknechts, dominated European battlefields, using these giants to shatter enemy pike formations. With a total length of 144 cm (approx. 56.7 inches) and a weight of nearly 3.8 kg (approx. 8.4 lbs), you are not holding a light toy, but a true instrument of power. Its rustic finish and blackened cross-guard give it a raw, authentic look, as if it had just been forged for the decisive Battle of Pavia. This sword is crafted in honour of the "Father of the Landsknechts", the famous commander Georg von Frundsberg, whose courage was as unyielding as this steel. Further product information ...

The Flaming Colossus of Georg von Frundsberg – Landsknecht Flamberge Sword

Design Details and Craftsmanship

The centrepiece of the sword is undoubtedly its flame-shaped blade. Historically, this wavy form was not merely an aesthetic choice; upon contact with an opponent's weapon, it created vibrations that made parrying and binding significantly more difficult. The blade is made of durable carbon steel and features a prominent ricasso (the blunt section of the blade above the guard). The ricasso is wrapped in high-quality black cowhide leather, allowing you to use "half-swording" techniques for more precise thrusting in close-quarter combat.

Located above the ricasso are the parierhaken (parrying hooks), which act as a secondary guard to protect your hands if an opponent's blade slides down. The massive hilt is decorated with elegant spirals and complemented by side rings for maximum hand protection. The hardwood handle is ergonomically shaped for a firm two-handed grip and finished with a robust steel pommel screwed to the tang, ensuring overall structural stability.

Historical Context: The Weapon of the "Doppelsöldner"

In the 16th century, the wielders of these swords were called Doppelsöldner. They were experienced veterans who received "double pay" for facing the enemy's wall of pikes in the front line. Their task was to use great sweeping strikes to knock aside or even chop off the heads of the pikes. The flamberge blade had a powerful psychological effect – wounds caused by this wavy edge were notoriously difficult to heal in the Renaissance period, striking legitimate terror into the hearts of the enemy.

Care and Maintenance

To ensure this colossus serves you for many years, provide it with regular maintenance. Since the blade is made of carbon steel, it is susceptible to corrosion. After every handling, wipe the blade with a dry cloth and apply a thin layer of protective oil (such as WD-40 or mineral oil). We recommend occasionally treating the leather on the ricasso with a beeswax-based leather balm to keep it supple. The wooden handle can be wiped with a damp cloth.

Safety Warning

For safety reasons, this sword is classified as a decorative replica. Although it is structurally robust, its significant weight means it possesses immense kinetic energy when in motion. Never use it for contact sparring against another person – there is a high risk of serious injury. The sword is not intended for cutting tests against hard objects. Any practical use for training drills is done entirely at your own risk.

We recommend pairing this monumental sword with a period Landsknecht costume or a wide leather sword belt to complete your historical kit.
