Gothic Two-Handed Sword Jamb with Flamboyant Blade

History, Usage, and Construction of the Jamb Two-Handed Sword

The design of this massive sword is inspired by European weaponry from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. During this era, two-handed swords (commonly known in German lands as Zweihänder) became dominant battle weapons. They were famously wielded by Landsknecht mercenaries, specifically Doppelsöldners, who received double pay to break through enemy pike formations in the front lines. The undulating Flamboyant blade was not merely decorative; when parrying an opposing weapon, the wavy edge created strong vibrations that disrupted the opponent's grip and guard. The parrying hooks (Parierhaken) above the ricasso protected the hands when choking up on the unsharpened blade section for close-quarters fighting.

This product represents a replica of an edged European cold weapon designed for historic martial arts and reenactment. The blade is forged from high-quality ČSN 14260 spring steel and oil-tempered to approximately 47 HRC, ensuring ideal flexibility and shock resistance against heavy blows. The full tang runs through the solid wood grip core, which is bound in thick leather for a firm, non-slip hold. The heavy forged crossguard and cast steel pommel create a well-distrusted center of balance despite the sword's impressive total length of 166 cm (65.35 in).

Meaning of the Name Jamb

This sword bears the proud name Jamb in honor of the historic city in West Flanders (modern-day Ypres / Ieper in Belgium). In the late Middle Ages, this city was a major European trading hub and the site of famous historical battles. The name pays tribute to the stubborn resilience and martial prowess of Flemish infantry who successfully repelled heavy cavalry charges.

Care and Safety Guidelines

The ČSN 14260 spring steel used for this sword is not stainless. After every use, clean moisture and sweat from the blade, dry it thoroughly, and coat it with a protective mineral oil (such as Ballistol). Please store the sword in a dry place out of reach of children. When ordering the version for historical stage combat, the blade edge will be 2–3 mm (0.08–0.12 in) thick with a rounded tip, making it suitable for contact fencing. Please note that due to construction limitations, the Flamberge wavy blade is not available in a sharp version. If a sword has a sharp edge, remember that for safety reasons it is never intended for contact combat or sparring, as doing so poses a risk of severe or fatal injury.

When engaging in contact fencing, always block incoming strikes using the flat side of the blade rather than direct edge-to-edge contact. Execute strikes with proper form without applying excessive force. Nicks on the edges are normal signs of wear; check the blade before every session and file down burrs with a diamond file or sandpaper. If the crossguard becomes loose over time due to impacts, the pommel must be tightened or re-peened. All activities with the sword are performed entirely at your own risk. Please read our Instructions for Use of Edged Weapons before first use.

Recommended Accessories

To ensure a safe and authentic experience with this 15th–16th century two-handed sword, we recommend pairing it with:

  • Padded leather fencing gloves – crucial hand and wrist protection when handling long two-handed weapons.
  • Maintenance oil for steel and leather – prevents rust on the spring steel blade and keeps the leather grip flexible.
  • Leather back harness – allows comfortable carrying and drawing of long swords during events.
  • Fabric or leather scabbard bag – protects the blade from moisture and scratches during transport.
