John Lee Golden Flower Katana – Sharp Folded Steel Sword
Functionality and Usage
This katana is designed as a fully functional replica. Here is an overview of what you can expect:
- Form Practice (Kata and Iaido): The sword is excellently balanced. Thanks to the fuller groove (Bo-Hi), the blade produces a characteristic swoosh (Tachi-Kaze) during a correctly executed cut, providing you with immediate feedback on your technique.
- Cutting Tests (Tameshigiri): The 1045 carbon steel blade is suitable for cutting soft targets, such as tatami mats or plastic bottles. Warning: Never strike hard objects (wood, bamboo), as this could damage the fine edge.
- Aesthetics and Collecting: Thanks to the Damascus grain (Hada) and detailed fittings (Koshirae), it is a representative piece that will stand out on a rack in any interior.
Symbolism of Sakura and History
The cherry blossom, or Sakura, is one of the most significant symbols of Japanese culture and the samurai class. It symbolizes beauty, new beginnings, but above all, the transience of life. Just as a cherry blossom in full bloom falls at the slightest breeze, a samurai was prepared to lay down his life at the moment of greatest glory. The guard (Tsuba) of this sword is inspired by historical examples from the 18th century, transferring this deep philosophical subtext into your hands.
Technical Craftsmanship
The build quality meets the high standards of the John Lee brand:
- Blade: Hand-forged from 1045 carbon steel, folded 12 times (over 8000 layers). This creates a unique surface structure. The edge hardness is approx. 52-55 HRC.
- Handle (Tsuka): The wooden core is covered with real ray skin and wrapped with black cotton cord in the Hineri-Maki style.
- Construction: The blade has a long tang (Nakago), which is securely fastened in the handle by two bamboo pegs (Mekugi). The sword is fully disassemblable.
- Scabbard (Saya): Wooden, lacquered with black glossy lacquer in the Kuroro style, complemented by a cotton cord (Sageo).

Sword Care
Since it is made of carbon steel, the sword is not stainless. To prevent your katana from rusting, follow these rules:
- Do not touch the blade with bare hands (human sweat is acidic).
- Clean the blade after every use and apply a thin layer of oil (e.g., Choji oil).
- Store the sword in a dry place, ideally in a horizontal position.
Safety Warning
This is a sharp weapon, not a toy. Handling it requires responsibility and experience. The sword is not intended for "blade-on-blade" contact combat. Use for cutting is entirely at your own risk. Sales are restricted to persons over 18 years of age.
The sword comes in a gift box with a cloth bag and a certificate of authenticity. We recommend purchasing a sword stand for safe display.
