Are you looking for a katana that is both a work of art and a functional weapon? The Katana Golden Flower by John Lee** is exactly that. Its dominant feature is the beautiful, intricately crafted and pierced **tsuba** (guard) with a motif of golden **cherry blossoms (Sakura)**, symbolizing beauty, new beginnings, and transience. But this is not just for decoration. The heart of the sword is its **sharply ground blade** in the Shinogi-Zukuri style, forged from **1045 carbon steel**. Katana Golden Flower, John Lee, Folded 1045 Steel

The model for this exceptionally beautiful tsuba was certainly created by a great master, probably in the 18th century. Cherry blossoms (Sakura) are one of the most important symbols of Japanese culture, and this katana pays homage to them in every detail.

Sword Details

Blade (Nagasa)

The blade is forged in the Shinogi-Zukuri style and is sharply ground. It is made from 1045 carbon steel that has been **folded 12 times**. This process not only creates over 8,000 layers but also a beautiful and distinct Damascus pattern (hada) visible along the entire length of the blade. To reduce weight and improve balance, the blade features a fuller (Bo-Hi), which also creates the characteristic "whooshing" sound (tachi-kaze) when swung.

Mountings (Koshirae)

  • Handle (Tsuka): The wooden core is covered with genuine white rayskin (Samegawa) and tightly wrapped with **black cotton** cord (Tsuka-ito) in the classic Hineri-Maki style. (Note: The photographs show a black wrap, although the original text mentions light brown).
  • Fittings (Fuchi, Kashira, Menuki): All ornaments are made of metal and continue the theme of golden cherry blossoms. The blade collar (Habaki) and spacers (Seppa) are made of brass.
  • Tsuba (Guard): The main showpiece of the sword – an intricately pierced (sukashi) guard with a bronze patina and golden flower details.
  • Construction: The sword has a long tang (nakago) secured in the handle with two bamboo pegs (mekugi). It is fully disassemblable, and no plastics were used in its construction.
  • Scabbard (Saya): It is made of wood and coated with a black, high-gloss lacquer (Kuroro style).

Safe Use Guidelines

Although this sword is a masterpiece, it is a fully functional and extremely sharp weapon. It is not a toy.

WARNING: Sharp Sword – This is not a toy!

  • Always handle the sword with the utmost caution and respect. It is razor-sharp and can cause serious or fatal injury.
  • Not intended for stage combat or blade-on-blade contact. Folded 1045 steel is not designed for impacts against other steel, and the blade could be damaged.
  • The sword is intended for collectors, kata (forms) practice, and potential test cutting (tameshigiri) on appropriate soft materials (e.g., tatami mats).
  • Never cut at hard objects (wood, bone, metal).
  • Keep the sword out of the reach of children and unauthorised persons. Use is strictly at your own risk.

Sword Care

The 1045 folded carbon steel blade is not stainless. To maintain its beauty and prevent rust, it requires care. After every use (even after simple handling), wipe the blade clean with a soft cloth (like nugui-gami rice paper) and apply a thin coat of conservation oil, ideally Choji oil. Store the sword in a dry environment. For complete care, we recommend the Japanese Sword Maintenance Kit (OH2105).

Katana též v pochvě příliš nedrží a až příliš snadno z ní vypadne.
