Late Medieval Sleeveless Surcoat "Gates of Hell" – Wool / Linen

Elegance and Controversy of the Late Middle Ages

This type of garment, known as the sideless surcoat, was immensely popular during the Gothic period. Its most distinctive feature is the deep armholes that extend down to the hips. This cut served a dual purpose: it allowed freedom of movement and, more importantly, it displayed the underdress (kirtle), which was often made of expensive fabrics. In times of strict morality, this style outraged church officials, who derogatorily called these large cutouts the "Gates of Hell" because they revealed the female form more than was customary at the time.

The model is designed to be worn as an outer layer over a long-sleeved dress. This allows you to create beautiful colour contrasts. The red wool variant looks noble and keeps you warm during evening gatherings by the fire. The blue linen version is breathable, wicks away moisture perfectly, and is ideal for hot summer days.

Care Instructions

To ensure this beautiful garment lasts as long as possible, please care for it according to the chosen material:

For the Wool Version (Red)

  • Wool has self-cleaning properties; often, airing it out in fresh air is sufficient.
  • If necessary, hand wash only in cold water with a wool detergent (containing lanolin).
  • Never tumble dry and do not use bleach.
  • Dry flat to prevent the garment from stretching out of shape.

For the Linen Version (Blue)

  • Machine wash on a gentle cycle up to 40°C (104°F).
  • Do not tumble dry, as linen may shrink and fibers may break.
  • Iron while slightly damp at a higher temperature to smooth the fabric beautifully.

Note: The delivery includes only the sleeveless surcoat. The long-sleeved underdress, belt, and other accessories shown in the photos are for illustration purposes only and are not included.
