Ornate Medieval Women's Overdress With Liripipe Hood

Historical Context And Usage

This long overdress, which flows gracefully to the floor, is inspired by the fashion of the High and Late Middle Ages (roughly the 14th to 15th centuries). During this time, the European nobility placed great emphasis on layering garments and rich ornamentation. The long sleeves, which flare out in a trumpet shape, were a massive fashion trend and added majesty to the feminine silhouette. A typical accessory of the medieval wardrobe was also the hood (or cowl) fitted with an elongated tail, often called a liripipe. Originally a practical element, it quickly became a highly sought-after fashion accessory among the upper classes. The garment is ideal as a representative outer layer (surcote) worn over a light linen or cotton underdress.

These richly decorated women's dresses can be custom-made in other colours according to these fabric swatches. Please note the desired colour in the comments section of your order. Material Care And Safety Instructions

This luxurious material requires gentle care, my friend. Please review our Cleaning and maintenance instructions. We highly recommend entrusting the cleaning of the garment to a professional dry cleaner. For home maintenance, choose only a very gentle hand wash in lukewarm water. Never dry the dress in a tumble dryer or in direct sunlight. Ironing must be done very carefully from the reverse side at the lowest possible temperature. Please exercise extreme caution when moving near an open flame – synthetic fibres can melt, and genuine cotton velvet is a highly flammable material.

To achieve a perfectly authentic medieval look, we highly recommend wearing a period underdress (chemise) beneath this overdress. Historical leather footwear corresponding to the 14th or 15th century and a narrow leather belt will also serve you excellently.
