Women's Gothic Surcoat Dress with Double Sleeves and Veil

Historical Context and Medieval Garment Details

This magnificent ensemble is based on the European court fashion of the High and Late Gothic periods (14th and 15th centuries). The outer dress is tailored in the form of a so-called surcoat. During this era, noblewomen and ladies of the court wore similarly richly decorated outer garments as an unmistakable symbol of their high social standing. The most striking feature of this garment is the highly popular double sleeves. The inner sleeves are long and narrow, while the outer, so-called false sleeves, fall freely in the manner of the famous medieval tippets well below the knees.

The overall impression is enhanced by the characteristic historical headwear in the form of a padded wreath (often called a bourrelet or roll), from which a light, fine veil falls down the back. The garment is made from a well-thought-out combination of durable duvetyn, luxurious-looking faux velvet, and shiny brocade. Duvetyn, consisting of 100% cotton, provides the dress with excellent breathability and a pleasant feel, while the velvet and brocade ensure a rich, historical appearance and excellent shape retention.

Costume Care and Safety Warnings

My lady, to ensure your robe remains breathtaking and serves you for many years as if new, give it the proper care and follow the cleaning and maintenance instructions. Due to the complex combination of different materials (pure cotton, faux velvet, metallic threads in the brocade), we strongly recommend gentle dry cleaning by professionals only. Never wash the dress in a washing machine and do not tumble dry it, as this could cause irreversible damage to the velvet and shrinking of the cotton. Ironing is only possible from the reverse side on the lowest heat setting. When wearing the long flowing dress, false sleeves, and veil, exercise extreme caution near open flames (torches, campfires, candles) and when walking up or down stairs to prevent tripping or the fabric catching fire.

Recommended Accessories

For an absolutely perfect and historically accurate 14th and 15th-century look, we recommend you complement this garment with period leather footwear, ideally elegant Gothic poulaines or crackowes. Fine Gothic jewellery or a massive necklace will also suit you perfectly, beautifully accentuating your face framed by the veil. Please note that footwear and jewellery shown in the photographs are not included in the delivery of this set.
