Late Gothic German Velvet Dress With Faux Fur Trim
Historical Context And Usage
This luxurious long overdress (often referred to as a robe) is inspired by the German fashion of the Late Gothic period, specifically the first half of the 15th century. During this time, the European nobility placed great emphasis on ostentation, rich ornamentation, and the layering of fabrics. The long, voluminous sleeves reaching almost to the ankles were a massive fashion trend and directly symbolized wealth, as the consumption of expensive fabric required to make them was enormous. The dress was worn as a highly representative outer layer. The deep V-neck is cleverly filled with a contrasting breastband (kirtle insert). The neckline, sleeves, and bottom hem of the skirt are generously decorated with faux fur, giving the garment a majestic appearance ideal for cooler autumn days. There is practical lacing on the back, allowing the garment to adapt perfectly to your figure.
These German dresses from the first half of the 15th century can be custom-made for you in other colours according to these fabric swatches. Material Care And Safety Instructions
Natural cotton velvet requires gentle care to preserve its deep lustre. Please carefully study our Cleaning and maintenance instructions. We highly recommend entrusting the cleaning of the garment to a professional dry cleaner. For home maintenance, choose only a very gentle hand wash in lukewarm water. Never dry the dress in a tumble dryer or in direct sunlight. Ironing must be done very carefully from the reverse side at the lowest possible temperature. Please exercise extreme caution when moving near an open flame – the synthetic fibres of the faux fur can melt, and genuine cotton velvet is a highly flammable material.
