Women's Velvet Gothic Dress For Noble Ladies

Historical Context And Usage

The cut of this garment refers back to the Late Gothic period, roughly the 15th century. In Western and Central Europe at that time, ladies of high nobility favoured fashion that emphasized a slender, elongated figure. Richly pleated skirts reaching the ground and long narrow sleeves were the standard of the upper classes. Furthermore, velvet was an exceptionally expensive material in the 15th century, and its wear was often restricted by sumptuary laws exclusively to the wealthy nobility. The dress is ideal as a representative outer layer (surcote) for various historical and LARP events. The natural cotton will also provide you with excellent comfort and breathability.

Upon request, we can make this luxurious Gothic dress in other colours according to these fabric swatches. Please note the desired colour in the comment field of your order. Velvet Care And Safety Instructions

Cotton velvet is a beautiful but delicate fabric. To preserve its deep lustre and colour, please follow our Cleaning and maintenance instructions. We recommend washing the dress very carefully by hand in lukewarm water or entrusting it to a professional dry cleaner. Never tumble dry it or leave it in direct sunlight. Always iron from the reverse side at a low temperature to avoid crushing the fine pile of the fabric. We also strongly warn you against moving close to an open fire – untreated cotton is highly flammable.

Recommended Accessories

To achieve the completely authentic look of a 15th-century Gothic lady, we highly recommend acquiring the ostentatious tall conical hat known as a hennin, which is depicted in the photographs. You can order this headdress, combined with a delicate veil, from us as an optional accessory for an additional charge. A narrow historical leather belt and a small pouch will also complement the dress perfectly. Please note that the belt, pouch, and headdress (unless chosen in the order) are not included in the basic delivery.
