Late Gothic Burgundian Women's Dress with Velvet Coif

Historical Context and Costume Usage

Burgundian fashion of the 15th century was the absolute pinnacle of late Gothic clothing culture. It dictated fashion trends for all of Europe at the time and was characterized by immense luxury, ostentation, and the elongation of the silhouette. This dress (historically referred to as a robe) perfectly copies the ideal of that era. The bodice is tightly cut, and the deep neckline, often reaching down to the belt, is filled with a contrasting fabric (the placard). The bag-like sleeves reaching to the knees and the fur trim were signs of high social status, demonstrating that the wearer did not have to perform any manual labour. Elaborate headwear, such as the included decorated coif, was also an indispensable part of this attire.

Material and Proper Care

To ensure a luxurious appearance and maintain its shape, the dress is made from a combination of premium materials. The base layer is sewn from 100% cotton velvet, which is soft to the touch and drapes beautifully. The placard and the inserted wedge in the skirt are made of decorative brocade (70% polyester, 30% metallic fibre) – a lightweight, yet densely woven fabric resistant to tearing. The neckline, sleeves, and the bottom hem of the skirt are trimmed with faux fur.

  • Washing and Cleaning: Due to the combination of velvet, brocade, and fur, professional dry cleaning is exclusively recommended. Machine washing could irreversibly damage the fur trims and the fine pile of the velvet.
  • Drying and Ironing: Never dry the dress in a tumble dryer. Ironing velvet is difficult; we recommend smoothing out any creases only by careful steaming from a distance, or by ironing strictly on the reverse side on the lowest heat setting.
  • Cleaning and care of costumes

We highly recommend accessorising this costume with period jewellery, such as a subtle pearl necklace, and historical leather shoes to bring your courtly look to absolute perfection.
