Late Gothic Women's Brocade Gown With Hennin
Historical Context And Usage
This type of garment, often referred to as a Burgundian gown or robe, has its historical roots in the fashion of the Late Gothic period, specifically the second half of the 15th century. During this era, largely influenced by the wealthy Burgundian court, noble ladies favoured garments that emphasized a slender, elongated silhouette. The bodice with a deep V-neck commonly revealed a contrasting breastband or underdress. An absolute fashion hit of the time were the double sleeves – practical, long, and tight inner sleeves, complemented by false outer pointed sleeves sewn at shoulder level, which flowed majestically down to the waist. An indispensable part of the wardrobe of high-ranking ladies was the conical hat called a hennin, completed with a delicate veil. The taller the hennin a lady wore, the higher her social standing. The dress is manufactured from sturdy brocade and cotton velvet, which ensures not only resistance to snags and abrasion but also excellent thermal comfort.
This Gothic dress with hennin can be custom-made in other colours according to these fabric swatches. Please note the desired colour in the comments section of your order. Always state (1) the swatch number, (2) the colour letter, and (3) the colour name. If a fabric with a different composition is chosen, the price may be subject to change. Material Care And Safety Instructions
The combination of brocade with metallic threads and natural cotton velvet requires very specific and gentle care. We strongly recommend that you carefully read the cleaning and maintenance instructions. It is ideal to entrust the garment to a professional dry cleaner. Under no circumstances should you wash the dress in a standard washing machine or dry it in a tumble dryer, as this could cause irreversible damage to the fibre structure. Ironing must be done exclusively from the reverse side at a very low temperature. When wearing this at historical events, exercise extreme caution near open flames – synthetic fibres tend to melt at high temperatures, and cotton is highly flammable.
Recommended Accessories
To bring your Late Gothic look to absolute perfection, we recommend complementing the costume with period women's leather footwear inspired by the 15th century (pointed shoes known as poulaines were very popular). The V-neck is virtually inviting you to wear a magnificent medieval necklace. Please note that footwear, jewellery, and any other accessories shown in the photographs (with the exception of the hennin) are not included in the delivery of this product.
