Sharp 1095 Carbon Steel Tsuru Katana with Crane Motif

Historical Significance and Symbolism

In Japanese mythology, the crane (Tsuru) is a mystical creature that is said to live for a thousand years. It has long been revered as a powerful symbol of good fortune, long life, and honor. For the samurai, the katana was not merely a weapon of war but an extension of their soul. By adorning the sword with the noble crane, the warrior embraced the virtues of longevity and inner peace, carrying a piece of cultural heritage into battle or daily life.

Traditional Forging and Craftsmanship

The blade of this katana is hand-forged using centuries-old techniques. Through the meticulous process of differential clay-tempering, the cutting edge is hardened to an impressive 56-58 HRC, ensuring it holds a devastatingly sharp edge that can effortlessly slice through paper right out of the box. Meanwhile, the spine is tempered to a softer 45-48 HRC, providing the blade with the flexibility needed to withstand impact without snapping. This ancient method leaves behind a stunning and visible temper line, known as the hamon.

The intricate fittings, including the hand-guard (tsuba), collar (fuchi), and pommel (kashira), are crafted from solid brass and feature an elegant aged finish. The wooden handle (tsuka) is tightly wrapped with genuine white rayskin and black cotton cord. The ensemble is completed by a sleek, glossy black wooden scabbard (saya).

Safety and Practical Usage

We must strongly emphasize that this katana is a fully functional, extremely sharp weapon. It demands the utmost respect and proper handling. The sword is highly recommended for martial arts practitioners focusing on forms (kata) and is fully capable of performing cutting tests (tameshigiri) on appropriate soft targets, such as soaked tatami mats.

However, this blade is not designed for edge-to-edge combat or theatrical sparring. The hard, thin edge can easily chip or sustain catastrophic damage if struck against other steel weapons or hard objects (like wood or bone). Due to its razor-sharp nature, careless handling can lead to severe or fatal injuries. Use of this sword is entirely at your own risk. Always keep it completely out of reach of children and untrained individuals.

Maintenance and Sword Care

The 1095 high carbon steel blade is not stainless and is susceptible to rust if neglected. Proper maintenance is required to preserve its structural integrity and mirror-like finish. Fortunately, everything you need is included in the elegant wooden "Shogun" presentation box. After every use—or even if you simply touch the blade—gently wipe it clean with the provided rice paper. Use the uchiko powder ball to gently tap the blade and absorb any remaining old oil, wipe it off, and then apply a light, fresh coat of oil using the cloth. The kit also includes a brass hammer designed for safely manipulating the wooden pegs (mekugi) when dismantling the hilt.

We highly recommend purchasing a traditional wooden sword stand to safely and beautifully display this piece in your home.
