Roman Commander Muscle Cuirass – Lorica Muscula

Masterful Craftsmanship with a Touch of History

The armour consists of a breastplate and a backplate, both hand-formed from mild steel. To give the cuirass its distinctive look, it is electroplated with brass and then artificially antiqued. This "antique" finish gives it the appearance of battle-hardened armour, rather than a shiny, cheap prop. The centre of the chest is adorned with a detailed metal relief of a bull's head – a symbol of power and untamed strength.

The two halves of the armour are connected by strong leather straps with adjustable buckles at the sides and shoulders. This allows you to adjust the cuirass for the most comfortable fit possible. A unique detail is the decorative metal tie-downs on the chest, which add to the overall aesthetic.

Historical Context and Usage

The Lorica Muscula, or muscle cuirass, was the privilege of high-ranking officers – legates, tribunes, and emperors themselves – during the Roman Republic and Empire. While rank-and-file legionaries wore chainmail (lorica hamata) or laminar armour (lorica segmentata), the officer corps preferred anatomically shaped cuirasses that referenced Greek tradition and heroic statues of gods.

It is important to note that this product is primarily a decorative and costume item. Although made of steel, it is not constructed for full-contact historical fencing (buhurt) or HEMA duels, where damage to its shape or injury to the wearer could occur. However, it is absolutely ideal for LARP, cosplay, theatre, or as a luxury decoration for your interior.

Armour Care

To keep the cuirass in perfect condition, give it a little care after each use:

  • Wipe sweat and moisture off the armour with a dry cloth.
  • Treat metal parts with preservation oil (e.g., WD-40 or Ballistol) to prevent corrosion beneath the brass layer.
  • Store the armour in a dry place, ideally on a stand, so the leather straps retain their shape.

For the perfect Roman commander look, complement this cuirass with the decorated vambraces and greaves from the same collection.
