Each scale, which is 60 mm long and 40 mm wide, is carefully riveted to the underlying black leather, which is 1.5 mm thick. The scales are made of 20-gauge mild steel (not stainless), about 1 mm thick, which provides good protection and flexibility. The shiny steel scales in combination with the black leather provide an impressive and authentic look. The cuirass is worn over the head and fastened at the sides with three sturdy leather straps (2 cm wide, 4 mm thick leather) and iron buckles to ensure a perfect fit.
