At first glance, it's clear that the Kondoru Katana differs from traditional Japanese swords. The creators have focused on pure functionality and durability, drawing inspiration from the legendary shape and purpose.

• Blade: The classically curved blade is crafted from 1075 carbon steel, known for its toughness and ability to hold a sharp edge. With a thickness of 6 mm, the blade is substantial and ready for demanding tasks.
• Handle (Tsuka): Instead of the traditional silk cord wrap (ito), this sword features textured walnut wood, ensuring a secure grip even when wearing gloves. The handle is secured to the blade's tang (nakago) with two sturdy pins.
• Guard (Tsuba): A simple, circular steel guard effectively protects the hand and enhances the sword's minimalist aesthetic.
• Scabbard (Saya): The scabbard is made from the same walnut wood as the handle, giving the sword a unified and elegant appearance. The paracord wrap (Sageo) is used to attach the sword to a belt (obi).

This sword is designed and built for practical use, specifically for cutting tests (tameshigiri) on appropriate targets such as tatami mats, bamboo, or water-filled plastic bottles. The blade is extremely sharp!

While the Kondoru Katana does not use these ancient techniques, it honours the legacy of the samurai swordsmiths by delivering the maximum functionality and cutting performance for which historical katanas were so renowned.

Care of the Sword

As the blade is made from 1075 carbon steel, it is susceptible to rust. Proper care is crucial to maintaining its beauty and function.

• After each use, and especially after cutting, carefully clean the blade with a soft cloth to remove all debris and fingerprints.
• Next, apply a thin coat of preservation oil to the entire blade (suitable options include mineral oil, gun oil, or traditional Choji oil).
• Store the sword in a dry environment, ideally in its wooden scabbard.
• Never touch the blade with bare hands, as the salt and moisture from your skin can cause rapid corrosion.
