Transport yourself to the era of the Crusades and the fierce battles of the Reconquista on the Iberian Peninsula. This unique helmet represents a fascinating evolutionary link in the development of European armour. It is a transitional type between open nasal helmets and fully enclosed Great Helms. The design is based on detailed Romanesque frescoes and sculptures on the portal of the church of Santa Maria la Real in the Spanish town of Sangüesa (Navarre), where warriors and giants are depicted wearing this specific gear. If you are looking for equipment that will distinguish you from the crowds of knights in standard bucket helms, and at the same time you desire historical authenticity from the 12th to 13th century, the Sangüesa model is exactly for you. It offers you a combination of excellent face protection and a conical shape that perfectly deflects blows from above. Further product information ...

Romanesque Enclosed Helmet Sangüesa – Steel Faceplate Helm

Construction and Usage

This replica is made of mild steel with a thickness of approximately 1.6 mm (16 gauge). Thanks to the conical shape of the skull, the helmet has a natural ability to deflect opponent's blades down the sides, thereby reducing the direct impact energy on your head and neck. The faceplate is firmly riveted to the skull using a reinforcing steel band. For your comfort, the helmet is equipped with:

  • Fabric Liner: Inside, you will find a glued-in, adjustable padded liner (see product photos) that ensures a comfortable fit and absorbs shocks.
  • Ventilation: Breathing holes are strategically placed on both the left and right sides of the faceplate, ensuring sufficient airflow even in the heat of battle.
  • Fastening: A sturdy leather chin strap with a brass buckle keeps the helmet securely in place during vigorous movement.

Although the helmet is made of quality steel, please bear in mind that it is a replica designed primarily for historical fencing (stage combat), re-enactment, and LARP. Due to the 1.6 mm material thickness and the use of mild steel, this helmet is not suitable for full-contact heavy combat such as buhurt (HMB, Battle of the Nations), where material deformation could occur.

Historical Context: From Nasal to Enclosed Helm

In the late 12th century, the classic Norman helmet with a nasal guard began to be insufficient. Weapons were improving, and warriors sought better face protection against arrows and slashing blows. The solution was to extend the nasal guard into a full faceplate, which eventually merged with the rest of the helmet. The Sangüesa helmet is a beautiful example of this "missing link". The original depiction at the church of Santa Maria la Real (construction started in 1131) shows mythological figures and warriors with precisely this type of head protection, demonstrating the popularity of this design in Christian Spain and southern France.

Armour Care

To ensure the helmet serves you well for a long time and does not rust, it requires proper care:

  1. Storage: Keep it in a dry environment. Moisture is the enemy of steel.
  2. Oiling: Wipe metal parts with an oily cloth (e.g., WD-40, Ballistol, or gun oil) after each use (and during long-term storage).
  3. Leather and Textile: Occasionally treat the leather strap with leather conditioner to prevent cracking. Air out the fabric liner to prevent mould caused by sweat.

Recommendation for Maximum Comfort

Although the helmet includes a padded liner, we strongly recommend that you wear a separate padded arming cap underneath. This not only increases comfort and hygiene (it is easy to wash) but acts primarily as an additional cushioning layer against concussion. For the complete look of a 12th-century knight, a chainmail coif and a surcoat go perfectly with this helmet.
