Historical Context and Costume Usage

Throughout the 15th century, this type of garment formed the absolute foundation of the wardrobe for middle- and lower-class women across Europe. While the nobility draped themselves in tight Burgundian robes with long trains, everyday women needed clothing that allowed freedom of movement for daily chores while remaining aesthetically pleasing. The overdress was practically laced at the front, which made dressing and size adjustment much easier. An indispensable accessory was the headcloth – a simple veil that both married and unmarried women used to cover their hair out of respect and for protection against dust. Today, this costume is perfectly suited for 15th-century historical reenactments, theatrical performances, LARPs, or period fairs.

Material and Proper Care

To ensure the costume serves you for as long as possible, we offer the overdress in two high-quality options: either warm 100% wool, which perfectly protects you from the cold, or durable duvetyn (100% cotton), which features a brushed velvet-like finish. The underdress and headcloth are always sewn from 100% cotton to guarantee maximum breathability and comfort.

• Woollen Overdress Variant: We exclusively recommend professional dry cleaning. Washing in water could cause irreversible shrinkage of the fabric and damage to the embroidery.
• Cotton Variant (Duvetyn, underdress, headcloth): Can be washed very gently by hand or in a washing machine on a delicate cycle at a maximum temperature of 30 °C (86 °F). Avoid using bleach and tumble dryers. Iron only on a low to medium heat setting.
• Cleaning and care of costumes

Please note that the leather pouch and historical footwear shown in the photographs are not included in the delivery. To bring your historical look to absolute perfection, we highly recommend purchasing a high-quality leather belt and a medieval leather pouch from our selection.
