HEMA Two-Handed Sword Götz von Berlichingen, Renaissance Spring Steel Greatsword
Construction and Practical Use of the Sword
This massive two-handed sword (Zweihänder or Spadone) is designed for maximum functionality and durability. The straight blade with a central ridge transitions smoothly into a ricasso, which is protected by prominent parrying hooks (lugs). These hooks serve to catch the opponent's blade during close-quarters combat. The massive crossguard is made of stainless steel and impresses with its twisted side-rings and quillons, reliably protecting your hands.
The hilt is a masterpiece in itself. At 48 cm (18.9 inches) long, it offers tremendous leverage for handling. Its shape is segmented for a firm grip and covered with an innovative combination of leather and silicone rubber, ensuring excellent anti-slip properties even when wearing sweaty gloves. The scent-stopper pommel is also twisted, and the blade tang is securely peened over it, which is the most historically reliable method of fixation.
The weapon belongs to the upgraded SWM series. The blade is precisely forged from spring steel, with the heat treatment process taking place in specialised workshops to achieve an optimal hardness range of 49-53 HRC. While standard HEMA longswords have a flex range of approx. 12-13 kgs (26-28 lbs), this two-handed giant features a flex strength of 15 kgs (33 lbs). This provides the necessary stiffness given its extreme length while still allowing for safe technique training. The sword is fully functional and designed for controlled HEMA fencing and drills.
Historical Context and Purpose
The historical originals of this sword date back to the early 16th century, a time when square pike formations dominated European battlefields. Huge two-handed swords were wielded by elite mercenaries known as Doppelsöldner (soldiers receiving double pay). Their task was to hack through the wall of enemy pikes, knock their points to the ground, and create breaches for the rest of their unit. These swords were not carried in a scabbard but rested over the shoulder like a halberd. The weapon had to be kept in constant motion during combat; its momentum created an impenetrable zone of protection around the swordsman.

Safety Warnings and Sword Care
Although the sword is designed for HEMA training, remember that it is a weapon with significant weight and leverage. Never use the sword for full-contact free sparring without adequate protective gear, and even with gear, exercise the utmost caution to avoid injuring yourself or your training partner. The weapon is not intended for chopping wood, trees, or other hard objects – that is what axes are for.
For the sword to serve you long and reliably, it requires regular maintenance. The spring steel blade is susceptible to rust. After every training session, clean it of sweat and moisture and preserve it with a suitable gun oil or sword oil. Pay special attention to the leather parts and occasionally check the tightness of the peened pommel. Store the sword in a dry environment.
For the safe transport of this two-handed jewel, we recommend purchasing a high-quality carrying bag, along with robust HEMA gloves and a fencing mask for your technique practice.
