Gothic Bascinet Helmet with Hounskull Visor “Coburg” – Custom Made
Features, History, and Usage
The bascinet with a hounskull visor evolved from the cervelliere and became the dominant head protection for men-at-arms across Europe in the second half of the 14th century. The prominent conical shape of the visor served to cause opponent's weapons (especially lances) to glance off, minimizing the impact energy on the face and neck. Breathing holes are strategically placed to ensure ventilation without compromising the structural integrity of the visor.
This "Coburg" model is equipped with a row of vervelles (staples) along the bottom edge of the skull. These are used to attach a chainmail aventail (camail), which protects the neck and shoulders. Please note that the chainmail aventail is not included, but we strongly recommend acquiring one to complete the historical look and increase protection.
Although the helmet is made of high-quality 1.5 mm (approx. 16 gauge) steel sheet, it is primarily designed for reenactment, stage use, and light historical fencing. It is not certified for full-contact sports like buhurt (HMB, Battle of the Nations), which typically require thicker materials and specific safety certifications. For maximum comfort and safety, always wear a padded arming cap under the helmet.
Product Care
Since the helmet is made of mild steel (not stainless), it requires regular maintenance. Wipe it dry after every use and apply a light coat of oil (e.g., WD-40 or gun oil) to prevent rust. Store it in a dry environment. Avoid dropping the helmet on hard surfaces (concrete, stone), as this could deform the visor or damage the hinge mechanism.
