Churburg Style Bascinet Helmet c. 1360-1390 - 1.6mm Steel Replica
The helmet is crafted from approximately 1.6mm thick steel plate, designed to develop a patina over time ("rusting steel"), lending it an even more authentic look. It consists of a smooth, rounded helmet bowl and the characteristic pointed, flap-up visor. The visor is perforated with rows of breathing holes, and its edge, along with the lower rim of the helmet bowl, is highlighted by brass edging. The visor is attached via hinges and removable pins, allowing for quick detachment. Around the lower edge of the bowl, brass vervelles (small pierced lugs) are riveted, enabling easy attachment of a mail aventail (neck guard) – please note, the aventail is not included. This version is intentionally simplified in some details, offering you a fantastic opportunity for further customisation and personalisation. The helmet is designed for a head perimeter of about 63–64 cm and comes complete with a leather chin strap for a secure fit.
Customisation Potential and Use
Thanks to its deliberately simpler design and the presence of vervelles, this helmet provides an excellent base for:
- Further Customisation: You can polish the helmet, paint it, add your own decorations, or fit an aventail according to your preferences.
- Re-enactment and Historical Martial Arts: Once fitted with an aventail and potentially other modifications (check your group's rules), it serves as solid head protection for portraying a warrior from the latter half of the 14th century.
- LARP: An ideal choice for a knight or heavy infantry character.
- Display: An impressive historical piece for your collection or interior decor.
- Costumes: A striking accessory for theatre, film, or themed events.
History and Inspiration
The bascinet was the predominant helmet type during the 14th century, evolving from earlier helmet designs and often worn with a mail aventail protecting the neck and shoulders. The visor offered facial protection, with various shapes (like this pointed one) providing a balance between defence and visibility. The original Churburg No. 13 helmet, which served as the model, is one of the best-preserved and most famous exhibits in the armoury at Churburg Castle (Castel Coira) in South Tyrol, Italy. This collection is considered one of the most significant private collections of medieval armour in the world and houses other stunning pieces, such as complete suits of Milanese plate armour.
Did You Know?
Churburg Castle, home to the original helmet, has been in the almost continuous ownership of a single family (the Counts Trapp) since 1531. It is largely thanks to this continuity that such a unique and extensive collection of armour has survived in its original state.
Caring for Your Helmet
As the helmet is made from steel prone to rusting, regular care is important:
- Storage: Keep the helmet dry.
- Cleaning: Wipe the helmet dry after use to remove perspiration and moisture.
- Rust Prevention: Regularly treat the metal parts with a thin layer of conservation oil (e.g., WD-40, Ballistol) or wax to prevent rust formation. If you prefer a patinated appearance, simply keep the surface clean and dry.
- Leather Strap: Occasionally treat the chin strap with a leather conditioner.
Step into the world of knights with this Churburg-style bascinet! Its historical lineage, solid construction by Marshal Historical, and potential for customisation make it an excellent choice for any medieval enthusiast.
