Tall skull and movable visor
The helmet skull tapers towards the top, with a central ridge defining its front. The projecting visor creates the characteristic “hound’s skull” profile. Rows of round ventilation holes complement the segmented sight openings at eye level. A separate shaped plate surrounds the lower face.
The visor can be raised and lowered, using substantial pins at its sides. A construction detail also shows a pin with a loop. Keep your fingers clear of moving joints and operate the visor without forcing it. Raising it makes communication and ventilation easier during breaks; closing it restricts both vision and airflow.
Historical inspiration and the name Poitiers
The hounskull belongs to the bascinet family of helmets. Its pronounced projecting visor is associated particularly with the late 14th and early 15th centuries. Historical helmets of this group protected the head and face; a mail aventail often provided additional protection around the neck.
Poitiers recalls the French city and the battle fought there in 1356 during the Hundred Years’ War. The name evokes the French knightly setting of that period rather than a particular helmet worn in the battle. This model incorporates modern construction changes and is not documented as a copy of a single historical original.

Care and safe wear
This helmet is not declared suitable as protective equipment for buhurt or Battle of the Nations. Steel thickness alone does not establish suitability for contact combat. Any proposed fencing use must be assessed by the organiser and a competent specialist against the relevant rules and the helmet’s construction.
Dry the helmet after wearing it, wipe the metal surfaces and apply a light coating of corrosion protection oil. Keep oil away from the fabric lining and leather. Store it in dry conditions, allow the lining to air and avoid abrasive cleaners. Repair damaged or loose connections before wearing it again.
