Heraldic Banner with Rampant Lion – Black & Red
Design and Practical Use
The banner is made from durable 100% cotton, giving it an authentic look and a pleasant texture that differs from modern synthetic substitutes. The top edge is equipped with loops (approx. 5 cm / 2 inches long), allowing you to easily slide the flag onto a wooden pole or spear shaft. At the bottom of the banner, you will find a small tie string. This is used to secure the lower end to the pole, ensuring the banner remains taut and the lion motif remains visible even in the wind, rather than bunching up unsightly. The bottom hem is cut in a swallowtail shape (inverted "V"), evoking a classic medieval style.
This specific design with the red lion on a black field is created to match other gear such as tabards and surcoats with the same motif. This allows you to easily create a visually unified unit.
Historical Context: Why Were Banners Used?
In the Middle Ages, when uniforms as we know them today did not exist, the battlefield was often a place of chaotic confusion. Dust, blood, and crowded spaces made orientation difficult. Heraldic colors and symbols on banners served as a key identification feature (IFF – Identification Friend or Foe). Soldiers used them to orient themselves, finding where their commander was located and where to direct their attack or retreat. The lion, as the king of beasts, was one of the most popular heraldic symbols, embodying strength, courage, and royal majesty.
Care Instructions
To keep your banner in perfect condition for as long as possible and prevent the colors from fading:
- We recommend hand wash only in lukewarm water.
- Do not use aggressive bleaches or chemical cleaners.
- Do not tumble dry; let it air dry naturally.
- If necessary, the cotton can be ironed at a medium temperature (we recommend ironing from the reverse side or through a cloth, especially over the lion appliqué).
Please note: The delivery includes the textile banner only. The wooden pole, fittings, or other accessories shown in the photos are not included in the package.
