Heraldic Symbolism and Historical Significance

The motifs of the lion and the eagle are among the absolutely most powerful symbols in medieval heraldry. The lion traditionally represents strength, courage, and earthly sovereign power, while the eagle symbolises heavenly power, sharpness, and nobility. In this unique design, the black and gold field is divided so that a golden lion emerges in the upper black section, and a black eagle dominates the lower gold section, beneath which lie two black chevrons. The combination of black and gold was immensely popular, especially among the high nobility and patrician families within the Holy Roman Empire. A fringe-lined banner served primarily for ceremonial purposes in the Middle Ages, clearly marking the presence of an important commander on the battlefield, or acting as magnificent decoration for jousting lists.

Choice of Material and Proper Care

The standard is crafted from genuine 100% cotton velvet. This material is characterised by a deep, luxurious lustre and a very rich texture that enhances the historical impression. True velvet, however, requires specific and gentle care. Absolutely do not wash the banner in a washing machine or by hand, as this could irreversibly damage the pile and cause the fabric to shrink. We recommend only very careful dry cleaning using a soft brush (always brushing in the direction of the nap) or entrusting the pennant to a professional dry cleaner. Completely avoid ironing the velvet directly. For safety reasons, never place this flag in the immediate vicinity of an open fire, campfire, or burning torches.

Mounting Method and Recommended Accessories

The top edge of the standard is equipped with a practical, continuous sleeve (tunnel) designed for firm and secure threading onto a horizontal or diagonal spar. So that the top sleeve can be sewn with absolute precision and is neither too tight nor unnecessarily loose on your pole, please do not forget to specify the exact diameter of the pole in your order notes. As optimal an accessory for this flag, we highly recommend acquiring a smoothly sanded and dark-stained wooden pole, which will perfectly underscore its overall historical appearance.
