Medieval Quartered Linen Banner with Fringes

Historical Context and Heraldry

In the Middle Ages, flags, pennants, and banners were not merely colourful decorations. On the chaotic battlefield, they represented an absolutely crucial orientation point around which troops formed, and they clearly declared allegiance to a given nobleman, commander, or free city. Quartering, i.e., dividing a shield or banner by a cross into four fields (often with alternating colours), was one of the basic and very popular heraldic devices. The fringes on the edges served not only as a decorative aesthetic element, but also had a practical purpose – they helped protect the firm edge of the fabric from quick fraying caused by strong winds.

Installation and Choice of Colours

This linen banner is ready to be slid onto a carrying pole using the top sleeve. In order for us to sew the sleeve exactly to measure and for the flag to fit well on the pole, it is absolutely essential to state the diameter of the pole on which your new standard will hang in the order notes. Do not forget to also specify your preferred colour combination in your order. You can choose from a wide range of classic heraldic colours. This allows you to create a standard that will exactly match your ideas and needs.

Linen Canvas Care Instructions

Linen is an excellent, very strong, and breathable natural material with a characteristic fibre texture that is absolutely ideal for historical reconstruction and reenactment. To keep your new banner in perfect condition and vibrant colours for a long time, we recommend that you follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Wash the banner preferably by hand or on a gentle cycle in the washing machine at a temperature of up to 30 °C (86 °F).
  • Use only mild detergents and never use chemical bleaches, which would destroy the colours.
  • Under no circumstances should you dry the linen canvas in a tumble dryer. The fabric could shrink and the fringes would become irreversibly tangled and damaged.
  • The best method is to let the standard dry freely in the fresh air.
  • You can iron the canvas on a higher heat setting designated for linen, ideally while the fabric is still slightly damp.
  • During very strong winds and severe storms, we recommend that you take the banner down from the pole to prevent mechanical tearing against surrounding objects.

Recommended Accessories

To go with this banner, we recommend purchasing a high-quality wooden ash pole from our range, and possibly small forged nails to firmly fix the fabric sleeve to the pole to prevent sliding. Please note that the wooden pole is not included.
