Medieval Linen Banner with Blue-Yellow Heraldry and Black Border
Historical Context and Heraldry
Heraldry on the medieval battlefield was not merely for show; it functioned as a vital identification system. Diagonal stripes (bendy) in the upper section and vertical division (party per pale) in the lower half were among the popular geometric charges on shields and banners. The combination of blue and yellow, visually anchored by a solid black border, ensured excellent visibility in the dust and chaos of battle. Although this banner is occasionally associated with the Hospitallers in some sources, from a historical perspective, this vibrant colour palette is much more typical for the coats of arms of noble houses, proud city militias, or colourful mercenary companies from the High and Late Middle Ages. This gives you enormous freedom in creating your unique costume or gaming faction.
Mounting and Installation
The top edge of the banner is primarily equipped with a continuous sleeve (tunnel) for easy and secure threading onto a horizontal spar (although the illustrative photograph may show a variant with loops, the sleeve is the definitive method for production). To ensure that the pennant fits your equipment perfectly and the sleeve is neither too tight nor unnecessarily loose, the product is always custom-tailored to your measurements. Therefore, please do not forget to specify the exact diameter of the pole on which you plan to hang the banner in your order notes. As an ideal accessory for this flag, we highly recommend acquiring a smoothly sanded, dark-stained wooden pole.
Linen Care and Maintenance Instructions
The banner is made of high-quality natural linen and therefore requires a gentle approach to maintenance to preserve its strength and colour saturation. We recommend washing the banner exclusively by hand in lukewarm water at a maximum temperature of 30 °C (86 °F). Completely avoid any bleaches and aggressive chemical stain removers, which could irreversibly damage the fabric. Never dry the banner in a tumble dryer – the linen could shrink significantly and become heavily creased. Ideally, dry it hanging freely or laid flat on an even surface. Ironing is possible at a higher temperature suitable for linen textiles, but ideally from the reverse side or through a clean, damp cloth.
