Richly Decorated Medieval Banner with Heraldic Lion and Fleur-de-lis
Heraldic Symbolism and Historical Significance
The combination of red and gold (yellow) colours was among the most striking and esteemed in the Middle Ages. The golden lion rampant is one of the oldest and most common heraldic beasts, symbolising courage, strength, and royal power. It is complemented by heraldic lilies (fleur-de-lis), which traditionally refer to purity and nobility and are often associated with the French monarchy or knightly virtues. The diagonal stripe (bend) completes the classic composition of a medieval coat of arms. The elongated shape of the standard, featuring a double-pointed tail and decorative tassels, points to ceremonial use or to marking the presence of an important commander on the battlefield.
Choice of Material and Proper Care
The banner is offered in two material variants to precisely match your needs and budget. The standard and most luxurious variant is made of true velvet, characterised by a deep lustre and rich texture, ideal for interior decoration and ceremonial purposes. The more economical variant is crafted from 100% natural linen, which offers excellent durability, a historically accurate rustic appearance, and is better suited for the harsher conditions of field camps. Both materials require proper care. We recommend washing the linen variant only gently by hand at a maximum of 30 °C (86 °F), without using bleaches, and never drying it in a tumble dryer. The velvet variant is best entrusted to a professional dry cleaner or very carefully dry-brushed. Avoid ironing the velvet directly, as this could scorch the fibres. For safety reasons, never place the flag in the immediate vicinity of an open fire, campfire, or torches.
Mounting Method and Recommended Accessories
The top edge of the standard is equipped with a practical, continuous sleeve (tunnel) designed for firm and secure threading onto a horizontal or diagonal spar. To ensure that the banner is custom-made to fit perfectly, and the sleeve is neither too tight nor unnecessarily loose, please do not forget to specify the exact diameter of the pole in your order notes. As optimal an accessory, we highly recommend a smoothly sanded, stained wooden pole. Please note that the wooden pole shown in the product photographs serves only as an illustration and is not included in the delivery.
