Medieval Linen Banner with St. Andrew's Cross and Yellow Field
Historical Context and Heraldry
The St. Andrew's Cross (a white diagonal cross, or saltire, on a blue field) is one of the oldest and most recognizable heraldic symbols. While made famous primarily by Scotland, it appeared in various colour combinations and meanings on banners throughout medieval Europe. This banner features an unusual rounded shape resembling a drop or a shield, bordered with a distinct white edge. This design was highly favoured by both infantry and cavalry for its excellent visibility and aerodynamics in the wind. The combination of blue, white, and yellow forms a very bold heraldic element, ensuring easy orientation for troops on the chaotic battlefield.
Mounting and Installation
The top edge of the banner is specially adapted for suspension from a horizontal spar. According to our production specifications, the flag is equipped with a continuous sleeve (tunnel) for easy threading onto a pole (although the illustrative photo may show loops, the primary attachment method according to the parameters is the sleeve). To ensure that the banner fits your equipment perfectly and the sleeve is neither too tight nor too loose, please specify the exact diameter of the pole on which the banner will hang in your order notes. As an ideal accessory for this banner, we highly recommend a smoothly sanded, dark-stained wooden pole.
Linen Care and Maintenance Instructions
Since the banner is sewn from natural linen, proper care is essential to maintain its vibrant colours and structural integrity. We recommend washing the flag only gently by hand in lukewarm water at a maximum temperature of 30 °C (86 °F). Strictly avoid the use of any bleaches or aggressive chemical stain removers, which would irreversibly destroy the colours. Never dry the banner in a tumble dryer – the linen fabric could shrink significantly and become heavily creased. It is best to dry it hanging freely or laid flat on an even surface. You can iron it at a higher temperature suitable for linen materials, but ideally from the reverse side or through a damp, clean cloth.
