Luxurious Velvet Medieval Banner with Black Heraldic Eagle
Heraldic Symbolism and Historical Significance
In heraldry, the eagle is, alongside the lion, one of the absolutely most common and esteemed animal charges. While the lion usually symbolises earthly power, the eagle is the ancient symbol of heavenly power, sharpness, courage, and nobility. The black eagle is historically most often associated with the Holy Roman Empire and its rulers. The combination of a white and red shield, complemented by white diagonal bendlets and small crosses, creates a highly complex coat of arms that in the Middle Ages would undoubtedly have belonged to a very wealthy and influential family. Fringe-lined banners appeared primarily at prestigious jousting tournaments and court ceremonies, where their purpose was to dazzle the audience present.
Mounting Method and Recommended Accessories
The top edge of the standard is equipped with a practical, continuous sleeve (tunnel) designed for secure and firm threading onto a horizontal or diagonal spar. The sleeve is always custom-sewn for the specific customer so that it is neither too tight nor unnecessarily loose on the pole. For this reason, we ask that you please remember to specify the exact diameter of the pole on which the banner will hang in your order notes. As optimal an accessory for this flag, we highly recommend acquiring a smoothly sanded and dark-stained wooden pole, which will perfectly underscore its historical and luxurious appearance.
True Velvet Care Instructions
The standard is made of genuine 100% cotton velvet, a material excelling in its deep lustre and texture, but requiring highly specific care. Absolutely do not wash the banner in a washing machine, and avoid hand washing as well, as this would irreversibly destroy the velvet pile and cause the fabric to shrink. We recommend only very careful dry cleaning using a soft brush (always brush in the direction of the nap). In case of heavier soiling, entrust the pennant to a professional dry cleaner. Never iron the velvet directly, so as not to scorch the fibres. We also strongly warn against placing the banner near an open fire, campfire, or burning torches – cotton is highly flammable.
